The Convent
(Review by Nigel Dungan)
In the year 1959 young Christine walked calmly into the convents
cheaple
where the nuns were deep in prayer. Armed with a baseball bat she beat
them,
set them alight with gasoline and blew then away one by one.
Now it's forty years later and a group of collage students want to
break
into the Convent to paint their fraturnatys numbers. They bring with
them a
wierd goth girl named Mo, who tells them the story about Christine and
that
she did it because the nuns gave her an abortion. Mo also tells them
that
the nuns still haunt the place waiting for revenge. The others all
dismiss
the story as and Urban Legend and deside to check the place out a
little.
Frijole wants to try and score with Mo so he wonders off with her and
pesters her, she tells him that she is a virgin and she is saving
herself.
Soon the cops come along so Frijole hides his drugs and Mo hides
because she
cant get in trouble with the cops because she is on parole. The others
leave
and Mo gets kidnapped by Devil Worshippers who want to use her to raise
demons. The collage students return for Frijole stash but as they enter
the
convent the devil worshippers sacrafise Mo, not knowing that it will
realese
demons upon the convent, killing off people and possessing their
bodies. Who
will survive the night, will the demons win or will a blast from their
past
come back to finish the job.
I know what you are thinking, Night Of The Demons, and you know what,
you
are right, this movie is infact alot like Night Of The Demons. In my
opinion
The Convent is infact better then Night Of The Demons 1 and 2 (never
saw 3)
for it's got a quicker pace and lots of action. The deaths in this
movie are
great, blood flows like wine, the demons in this movie are very
creative.
The charicters are quite likable and each actor does a great job, they
arn't
oscar winning but they are very good. The best thing about the Convent
is
the amount of action there is, lots of good vs evil, loads of gun fire
comes
into play. Mike Mendez is a director with a future for the action and
death
scenes are very stylishly done, the opening sequence is proof and also
one
of the best opening sequences I've ever seen. One thing that really
surprised me about The Convent was the humor involved, this is infact a
funny movie at times, loads of scenes had me laughing right out loud, I
actully can't think of a joke that fails. I guess after reading this
you
know I highly recommened the Convent, it's a very hard movie to find
but
it's worth your money.
