time-lapse photography on the island of Terschelling

29 August 2001; 01:30 - 02:30 UT

Exposure of one hour at 16 mm f/3.5 on Kodak Gold 200 ISO , field of view 150 x 100 degrees.

This was a very clear night with a cold and dry wind from the north. The air was so transparant that the milky way could be seen touching the horizon.

All night long a diffuse glow was seen over the northern horizon. In the picture this turned out to be green diffuse aurora. Very low over the horizon due north some red aurora is also visible between far away cloudbanks.

The zodiacal light was very prominent that night, stretching as far as 100 degrees from the sun near the beginning of astronomical twilight. Near the horizon the zodiacal light was many times brighter than the milky way.

The picture was taken near the "Heartbreak Hotel" which is the eastern most place on the island where one can stop and drink a cup of coffee. The 'hotel" was lit by walking around it with a small flashlight.

The white lines on the horizon are the navigation lights of passing freight ships. The red line just above these are the red top lights of an oil production platform that is tugged over the Northsea. The bright light near the right hand side of the picture is the lighthouse of the island Ameland, some twenty kilometers away.
