the destiny of Jason.
My
Review: This film marked Newline’s first involvement in the Friday
series, after Paramount let it go. What
Newline gives is an entry that has become a source of love and hate among
Friday films. For me, I love the
film.
The screenplay is very
solid while it attempts to introduce long time fans of the series the
background on the Voorhees family. Along
the way many secrets are discovered, including the supposed only way to really
kill Jason. Of course though, nothing this evil can be destroyed.
The cast includes many
known faces, which is a new facet to the Friday franchise.
Erin Gray, from the 80’s television hits “Buck Rogers” and
“Silver Spoons,” Steven Williams from Fox’s “21 Jumpstreet,” and
John D. LeMay from the television series “Friday The 13th: The
Series” (a show that borrowed the Friday name in name alone).
It also features an early appearance by “Queer As Folk’s”
Michelle Clunie as the dark-haired victim of ‘Jason’ in the infamous tent
scene.
Two commercial versions of
this film exist, while another ‘missing’ version of the film contains even
more elements. The unrated
version is the one to see for it includes a lot more wonderful gore and a
longer version of the ‘eating heart’ scene.
The other missing version, which I have not scene along with most of
the horror public, continues with more story and is actually what the director
of the film prefers and is hoping to get onto the forthcoming DVD release.
Overall:
Many fans dislike this entry due to the fact of the background story of
the film. I personally feel that
it works if you have an imagination and don’t have to have every aspect of
the film ‘handed’ to you. The
biggest disappointment in the film is that Kane Hotter doesn’t get much time
as our hero, when he is though, his presence as Jason is incredible.
The film also set’s up the must anticipated teaming of Jason and
Freddy.
