FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN

Director(s): Rob Hedden

Writer(s): Victor Miller, Rob Hedden

Cast: Kane Hodder, Jensen Daggett,  Barbara Bingham, Peter Mark Richman, Warren Munson, Fred Henderson,  Scott Reeves

Synopsis: The last graduating glass of Crystal Lake High School celebrate their achievement on a yacht to New York City.  Unfortunately for them, Crystal Lake’s most infamous killer stows away with them.  Some aren’t going to make it college.

My Review: Paramount’s last try at a Friday film finally gave them what they longed for.  Somewhat positive reaction from critics.  On the bad side of that fans of the series weren’t as pleased.

The biggest problem with the film is the somewhat misleading title.  Jason spends only the last twenty-five percent of the film in the Big Apple.  The rest is on the ship.  Not that it is all bad though.  There are some nice kills, but unlike before, no risk taking happened.  Instead, the director did not choose to extend the gore for feeling, ‘Why it will only be cut anyway?’  And this point shows throughout.  By this time, they were playing it way to safe.

The movie is also plagued by many technical problems such as being able to see ‘rain’ coming from an overhead sprinkler and a screenplay that tries desperately to succeed, but fails on most points.  The ending of the film is an even bigger problem, which I think really takes the film down.

Overall:  Not bad, just not good.  Kane Hodder tries desperately to avoid the meek plot, and he almost succeeds.  He would have if the director had had guts himself.
