ALIEN 3

Director(s): David Fincher

Writer(s): Dan O' Bannon, Ronald Shusett

Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dutton, Charles Dance, Paul McGann, Brian Glover and Lance Jenrikson

Synopsis: Ripley’s pod crashes onto a prison planet filled only with men of varying degrees of crime.  After being told to limit her interaction until “The Company” can recover her she discovers that an Alien is once again present, and an unspoken evil that lurks inside

My Review: I am a strange one when it comes to this chapter of the adventures in Ripley’s life.  I loved it the moment I saw it in the theater and it continues to bring me delight with its bleak vision and dark tone.  Many seem to hate this film and I can see why, but they should really look at what the movie is.  After the events that befall Ripley in the previous film, this movie serves as a natural progression of her character as both a human and a warrior.

The film is gorgeously, constructed, both in sets and setting as well as a awesome screenplay filled with depth and meaning as Ripley is joined by men that have “found God at the Ass end of the Universe.”  The movie serves it purpose and many feel to realize this.

The biggest problem with the film was not with the crew of the picture.  20th Century Fox is the biggest to blame for how disappointing this film comes across to many.  From editing the film down, to radically changing the concept of the film, Fincher worked hard at getting his name off the picture due to the end result.

There are many deleted scenes from this film that if included, it seems like it would have been more action based, as to that, it seem that is what the public wanted.  Instead they are given a thought-provoking piece in which the viewer is left to his discretion.

Overall:  A fine film.  Honestly this film is my favorite from the Alien series mostly in part due to the fine performance of Weaver.  The film will also be a sore spot to many that simply cannot find the truth in the picture.  It is a wonderful film that should have and would have done better, had the studio not interfered with the movie making process.
