Magnolia Cert 18

What can you say about a cinematic experience that lasts an interminable 3hrs and 8minutes long, apart from make sure you either take a cushion with you to the cinema or sit in a really comfy seat.
Magnolia is Paul Thomas Anderson's third film as a director and follows hard on the heels of his previous hit `Boogie Nights'. The storyline, if you can call it that, follows the day of a dozen or so dismal characters from the San Fernando Valley in California, who as the day progresses, we realize are connected in some form of emotional or psychological bond. However, the way the film is directed, chopping from one vignette to another, the viewers' interest in the characters slides from mild apathy to total disinterest.
Boasting an impressive cast  that features Jason Robards, Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore, sadly, the only thing that makes a lasting impact is the storm of biblical proportions that comes right at the end of the film.
With a musical soundtrack which at times is so loud it actually drowns out the actors, a total overkill in the `F' word department by Julianne Moore (believe me if they ever make swearing an Olympic sport Ms. Moore will win gold) and with probably the most obnoxious, repulsive part Tom Cruise will ever play, Magnolia is a memorable film but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons
