Mel Gibson is zowel regisseur als hoofdrolspeler in dit keiharde epos over de brute strijd voor de onafhankelijkheid van Schotland in de 13de eeuw. Als de vrouw van Wiliam Wallace (Mel Gibson) op brute wijze door de Engelsen wordt mishandeld en vermoord, verandert zijn lust naar vergelding in een ongepassioneerde dwang naar vrijheid voor Schotland. Alle verhalen die de ronde doen over Wallace's bravoure, inspireert het volk om de strijd aan te gaan tegen de Brittem en een totale oorlog is het gevolg.
