Brian DePalma's Mission: Impossible is the film version of the popular 1960s television
series (only the character of Jim Phelps is resurrected)--with a high-tech, high-octane spin. Ethan
Hunt is the leader of the Impossible Mission Force, an impeccable U.S. intelligence team. Their
mission (should they choose to accept it) is to stop a Russian agent from stealing a computer disk
that contains the true identities of undercover spies. However, things go terribly wrong, and only
Hunt and Phelps's wife survive the debacle. As a result, Ethan is wrongly labeled a traitor and a
mole by his employer. To clear his name, the toothsome agent assembles a new team, and together
they set out to apprehend the crafty criminal who set him up, using all the wits, firepower, and
gadgets they can muster. Tom Cruise stars as Hunt, with Jon Voight taking on the role of Jim
Phelps, played so admirably by Peter Graves in the television series.
