Season Highlights McLaren Mercedes were the team to beat in 1998, finishing first and second in the first 2 races. Highlights of the Australian Grand Prix. Hakkinen lead from pole, but mistakenly pit for a second time, handing the lead to teammate Coulthard. However, a pre-race agreement meant DC moved over to controversially hand victory to Mika Hakkinen.

Monaco GP Highlights
Highlights of the 1998 Monaco Grand Prix. One of Mika Hakkinen's greatest drives in Formula One, he finished in first place ahead of Fisichella and Eddie Irvine. Schumacher had a blinding battle with Wurz' Bennetton, the pair were flying round the twisty street circuit banging wheels throughout! Wurz had a massive crash later exiting the tunnel, while Schumacher found himself with suspension damage following his antics with the Austrian. The music is Neil Richardson - The Riviera Affair.

British GP Highlights
More controvesy as Schumacher was given a stop/go penulty which, thanks to clever interpretation of the rules, he was able to take after he finished the race! Beforehand, Hakkinen had built up a 40s lead, then the safety car was deployed, allowing MS to close and pass when the McLaren took a trip across the grass at Maggotts.

Austrian GP Highlights
1998 Austrian GP highlights. The grid for the race was unusual, with Fisichella taking his first (and only) pole position to date and Alesi in second, after a wet qualifying session. Coulthard was down in 14th, and crashed out on lap one, but stormed his way back through the field to take second place at the finish! Schumacher famously ran wide and went off the track, bouncing madly across the gravel but still finished third.

Belgian GP Highlights
Highlights of the absolutely unbeleivable Belgian Grand Prix of 1998, which saw a stunning 13 car pile-up on the opening lap. The most controversy came when Schumacher hit the back of a lapped Coulthard mid-race, retiring both of them. With Hakkinen already out, Schumacher, feeling that the Scot had caused the incident deliberately, stormed down the pit lane in seek of Coulthard. Fisichella had a scary crash too, while Damon Hill triumphed in the pouring rain.

Italian GP Highlights
At a circuit at which McLaren were expected to dominate, another wet qualifying saw M Schumacher on pole with Villeneuve alongside in the Williams. Both McLarens however, flew of the start line and took P1 and 2. This did not last, with Coulthard's blown engine blocking Hakkinen's view, just what Schumacher needed to snatch the lead. Hakkinen later spun off trying to catch the lead, regained but finished fourth.

We had astonishing scenes at the start; it was aborted twice, the second time at 13:13 - the unlucky Schumacher stalled on pole. He had to start from the back of the grid, but win or bust, he drove like a man possessed!
