Language is an important indication of group identity.

Language is a key factor for both self and outside perception.

In the case of chatrooms such as Msn and Mirc, language patterns evolve as users develop idiosyncratic styles of interaction. This refers to phrases and abbreviations.

For example:

  1. OMG = Oh my god
  2. BTW = By the way
  3. BRB = Be right back
  4. TTYL = Talk to you later

Gender differences can also be depicted through this using phrases expressing one's identification with the online community. Users move into new region and pickup local accents.
