If You Really Cared

If you really cared...

You'd look me in the eyes when you talk to me;

You'd think about what I am saying

rather than what you are going to say next;

You'd hear my feelings as well as my words.

If you really cared...

You'd listen without defending;

You'd hear without deciding whether I'm right or wrong;

You'd ask me why, not just how and when and where.

If you really cared...

You'd laugh with me but not at me;

You'd talk with me and not to me;

and you'd know when it's time to do neither.

If you really cared...

You wouldn't climb over my walls;

You'd hang around until I let you in the gate.

You would not unlock my secrets;

You'd wait until I handed you the key.

If you really cared...

You'd put your scripts away,

and leave your solutions alone.

Your performance would end.

Then...I can be myself.
