LIGHT ON LIGHT:

Illuminations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the Mystical Visions of the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich

From the back cover...

LIGHT ON LIGHT is the first attempt in this country to summarize and comment on the visions of the daily life of Jesus Christ, which were experienced by a remarkable nun living in Germany in the early 1800s--visions which illuminate and harmonize many Gospel passages.

back cover - Light on Light: Illuminations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the Mystical Visions of the Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich Visions were only a secondary charism for Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich, as her vocation was a most rare and difficult one--to suffer redemptively, in union with Christ, for sinners alive and in Purgatory. She bore the bleeding wounds of Christ in her hands, feet, and side--and not only those five stigmata, but also marks of a crown of thorns, and two crosses on her chest. Due to the anti-clericalism of the times, her convent was closed and she was subjected to humiliating investigations by civil authorities who wished to prove her a fraud, as well as to painful treatments by which her religious superiors vainly tried to heal her wounds. Her heroic virtue has been proven to the Church's satisfaction, as has a miracle attributed to her posthumous intervention, and as a result she was beatified in October 2004.

Despite the distraction of her physical sufferings, which confined her to a sick bed in a rented room, and a steady stream of visitors who came out of curiosity or seeking her spiritual help, she dictated what she could recall of events in the history of Salvation, which she continuously saw while in a mystical state. From the thousands of pages of published visions, the ones selected for comment in this volume deal with the crucial aspects of Christ's life, Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
