23.02.2005 My friends... what can I say? I came to Cambodia to enjoy these beautiful and mysterious temples of angkor wat and instead my trip to Cambodia filled my eyes with tears... Cambodia ist one of the ten poorest countries of the world. More than half of the population are under the age of 15. I nearly never saw old people. This country is full of contradictions, the light and drak, old and new, rich and poor, love and hate, life and death. The hellish years under Khemer Rouge still has left the people profoundley shocked. Whenever you hear the name Pol Pot it will be connected with stories of endless personal tragedy, of deads, from which most of the Cambodians never had the chance to recover. Such suffering takes for sure a long time to heal. And also because of the immense mortality rate it encourages people to live for today and not to think about tomorrow because not so long time ago there was no tomorrow. I am shocked, touched by the tragedy of this country. Everywhere children asking you for money or food. Everywhere injured people from mines. The people live in small straw huts with no electricity, no water taps, no fridge - just nothing. It really makes you change your mind about what is important in life and what is not. Celine
