The Lady
I wonder what she thought
As she stood there, strong and tall
She couldn't turn away
She was forced to watch it allDid she long to offer comfort,
As her country bled?
With her arm forever frozen
High above her headShe could not shield her eyes
She could not hide her face
She just stared across the water
Keeping Freedom's placeThe smell of smoke and terror
somehow reduced her size
So small within the harber
But still we recognized...How dignified and beautiful
On a day so many died
I wonder what she thought
I know she must have criedAs the soot and dirt and ash rained down
We became one colorAs we carried each other down
the stairs of the burning building
We become one classAs we lit candles of waiting and hope
We became one generationAs we fell to out knees in pray for strength
We became one faithAs we whispered or shouted words of encourgement
We spoke one languageAs we gave our blood in lines a mile long
We became one bodyAs we mourned together the great loss
We became one familyAs we cried tears of grief and loss
We became one soulNow as we recall with pride,
the sacrifice of heroes
We became one peopleWe are One.
We are United.
We are America.
My favorite story is about a man whose batteries never wore down. I want to share this story with my friends. His business failed when he was 31. Then he ran for the state legislature at 33 and lost. He tried business again at 33 and failed, lost his fiancee to illness at 35, had a nervous breakdown at 36, ran again for Congress at 40 and was defeated. Again at 48 he ran and lost. At 55 he ran for the Senate and was defeated. He then lost a bid at the vice presidency at 56, and at 58, ran for the Senate and lost, again. This man ran and ran but he never ran out of hope. He elected to keep going. And at the age of 60, America elected Abraham Lincoln president.
