Neptune

In Greek Mythology Neptune is called Poseidon. Poseidon was god of three main things (sea, horses and earthquakes) but was most famous as the God of the Sea. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea and his main symbol is the trident or three pronged fish spear. Sailors prayed to him for safe voyage while at sea. Mortal men drowned horses as tribute to him. He was thought to live on the ocean floor in a palace made of coral and gems and rode a beautiful chariot pulled by horses. He had a bad temper and at times could be very violent. Poseidon like his brother Zeus had many love affairs and had many children. It is said that he had a love affair with his sister Demeter, the godess of the harvest. Even with his bad temper he could be kind and helped the Greeks win the Trojan War.

Neptune is the Roman name for the God of the Sea. Neptune was modeled after Poseidon and even resembles him in statues. Neptune was the son of Saturn and Ops. He married the sea nymph Amphitrite, and they had a son, Triton, who was half man and half fish.
