Pandas originally come from China. It is a fact that they have been around for more than a million years. Many of them are at zoos all over the world; however, they only live in six parts of China, and only about 1000 are left in the wild. They are considered the most rare mammals in the world! Pandas also have many different names. They are either called pandas or bamboo bears, and in China they are called Daxiongmao which mean "large bear cat."

As you can see, pandas have white faces with black circles around their eyes and ears. They are similar to the American black bear. They have a big head, a large body, and a short black tail. They can grow up the 3 ½ - 5 feet and weight about 350 pounds. However, males are usually 10-20% larger than the females. They have developed molars, simply so they can easily chew their food that they eat and have opposable thumbs and large wrists so they can grab their food easily. They are called giant pandas but are not even close to being a giant. Forty of them will weigh the same as a single elephant!

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Carnivora

Family: Ailuropodidae

Most panda bears live in the forest, where there are many mountains in southwestern China. They live where there are many trees and in most of the areas where the pandas live, they have to compete with the farmers who have farms next to the river valleys and live next to the lower slopes of the mountains. Since many farmers are now taking over the land, pandas do not have a place to live, so most of them are dying due to starvation. The pandas homes range from 1.5 to 3.5 square miles and female pandas seem to live in a range of 75 to 100 acres.
