Rationale

Women of Indonesia

As part of my Introduction to Women Studies class this semester each student was to choose a country to explore using a variety of resources such as, books, novels and the internet to learn about women’s experiences in that country’s culture.

I choose Indonesia as my country to investigate mostly because of fate. I happened to be attending a Mother/Daughter conference the weekend prior to learning of this class project. At the conference was a representative from a group called, Compassion International. The representative had brought pictures and the history’s of 15 young girls from around the globe that needed support. The representative, an older women in her 70's seemed so sincere and kind that my 10 year old daughter Katie and I decided to become sponsors for a young girl named, Norita Sari Dujiningtyas. Norita lives in Tirtoyoso Manahan, a community of 5000, on the Island of Java. Java is one of the five major islands out of the13,000 islands that make up the country of Indonesia. Norita was born on November 4, 1997 which means she will be six years old this year.

Since I knew nothing of Indonesia, I thought this class project would tie in nicely with our decision to sponsor this child. My goal is to become more informed of some of the issues that face women in Indonesia. Doing so will also give me a better understanding of Norita’s experience. I hope to include Katie in gathering research and to share with her and others the results of the class project.
