The
website looks great and I like the new design since the last
time
I visited.
Did
you eliminate people's personal websites or are they moved?
My
family goes upstate every year and stops at Russo's
Restaurant
but
I didn't see their place listed under restaurants or the "yellow
pages" section.
Also
some of the pages the text is aligned right and hard to read over
the
design.
Lots
of great changes and the pictures of the area are nice to see.
Happy
New Year!
Thanks!
Hello,
I would just like to bring to your attention
the photo of the
junction of Routes 23 and 145 on the Where We
Are section of your
Cairo web site. While I am the
photographer and have no problems
with you using the photo, the link you use for
the page, which is
http://www.gribblenation.com/nyends/145.html
has been updated to
http://www.state-ends.com/nyends/145.html.
Otherwise, a nice site.
As a child coming from Long Island to my
family's cabin near
Jefferson during the 1980s, we would usually
pass through Cairo on
Route 23. Thank you for your time.

I
was born in 1964, my family moved to Cairo in '67. We lived one house
off Main Street. My Aunt was shot when they tore down the landmark Hotel
Walters. I graduated in '83 but was supposed to graduate with the class
of '82. I called Cairo home until I was 21, then I moved to AZ for 6
years and now I live in MT.

My

I
am trying to find out the history and obtain pictures of the house in

It

I know it was called The Pine Grove House at that time and believe it

I

How
many of you can remember Slippery Rock - Horton's and Maggie's
Hole -Deadmans - Little Half and the Lava Beds or the famous
"between the trees" jump
at Half Moon ?
What about the escaped Elephant that nobody seemed to ever see or
the
places lost to other names like Phinneys Peak - Stoppels
Point and Horses Neck ?
How many of you remember Cairos original mass transportation
leaders
- Claude Story - Dinger and Milt or such unforgetable
characters as Oakley Stickels -
Fred
Weeks and Willie Lump Lump ?
What about those walks on moonlit nights with your"
honey" to Week's
Pond or an ice creme cone at the Sugarloaf .
Who
could forget those lines on Friday night at the
Love Star Theater ?
I think what I can remember the most is
the hustle and bustle of
our town during the busy summer season and then how quite and
peaceful it became
after
Labor Day when the still of the evening
would only be broken by a tractor trailer pulling through town or
on
those extremely still evenings when the sound of a vehicle could
be heard going over the
old

If you can remember those days send me an e-mail -
we've got alot
in common and alot more to remember.

My name is Roger
Bourgeois and I'm writing to you for my son Christian, who's epileptic
and light mentally
deficient. By the past due to the frequencies of his
SEIZURES, he had a brain surgery.
I have a very good friend, Mr Yvon
Labelle who's police director of my city, and to my demand he gave the opportunity to my son to be policeman for a day.
So he patrolled
and at the end Mr. Labelle gave him a police crest, the one policeman
wear on both arms
of their shirt.
So after that day,
I had the idea to start the police crests collection for my son,
because he was so fascinated by the policeman and so happy to received
a police crest.
So I'm writing to you, to ask if it's possible to have
one of your city?
We already received some police crests from other
cities in the world and
I hope your police crest will be a part of my
son's collection.
If the person
who's receiving the e-mail, is not the good person, I hope she will
have the amiability to
re-send the e-mail to the appropriate person.

about Cairo and the

Hi ! I was born, grew up (graduated in 1960) and got married in
Cairo. I have been gone for 40 years now, and there are no words
that
can really express how much it means to be able to "visit"
home again

the
good work because, for folks like myself, it's the only way I'll ever

but I actually crave to see as much of my home town as you can provide.
Thank you again for the time and effort you've put into this project.

Hi - this is a great
history piece! My name is Debbie Barnum and
I visited your local cemetery at
the top of a small hill to try to find my ancestors' plot.
I was surprised
to see that the plot (Austin) was being kept in great shape, was
surrounded
by a type of fence and raised slightly.
My mother had always said that my
great grandmother, Bessie Lyster Austin,
was the only surviving child of the
family and that all her siblings were buried in Cairo.
I think Mom was mixed
up because her father was Samuel Ludlow Austin and she was born in Vermont -
this plot must have been her grandfather's - however the children's stones
are unreadable - are there records
anywhere that would shed some light on
the Austins and the children's names and dates?
Did they live in
Cairo and
if so, what did he do? His name was Horace Austin - b. 10/7/1795 - d.
7/9/1888.
Wife - Mary Ludlow b. 9/26/1799 - d. 8/9/1868 - readable children's
stones= Edwin Henry; Emily,
maybe Elizabeth? and maybe Austin? - and one
more unreadable - this wasn't exactly 12 kids like Mom
said but then history
does have a way of changing ...if you could even tell me who to contact by
phone or
mail to direct me I would appreciate it.
Thanks - Debbie Barnum

I lived in Cairo from about '74-'85. I was 5 and moved when I was
15. I lived behind the elementary school right on the corner of Bross
and Grove in a big white house. Mrs. Ruland was our landlady. As a
child that town was my playground. My friends and I actually went
around town and put pieces of TV antennae in trees with wire running
down the trees. "Why" you ask? We had walkie talkies we
would connect to these to get better reception.
I remember when they were building
the library with those solar panels in the back.
Before the parking lot was put in, it was a series of ditches we would ride our bikes in.
I
met my best friends on the trail behind what used to be Bubba's Market. My dad would stop for a
bite toeat at Jeans Rest. I remember when
Great American burned down.
I used to work at Jr Speedway and
eat ice cream at Van's and pizza at Russo's. I rode my bike all over that
town. I was there watching the big barn burn down at what was then
called the County Farm. I remember the birch trees that lined the road
going down to the County Farm that had to be cut down because of some disease.
We used to camp in those woods and ride our Honda 70's through
those trails, hunt rabbits and squirrels.
The picture of the skaters has a hill behind it that we used to sled down during the winter.
All this and much more to say that as a photographer I
would love to
see more pictures of the town. Also, as a photographer I look forward to
the day when I can visit the old stomping grounds with my own camera.

I have
been coming up to Cairo for the past twenty years between my folks taking me to see my aunt and uncle.
they have moved to the west coast and my
family doesn't travel up north any more.
I still carry the tradition
with my family. I remember visiting a house years ago which was empty for a very
very
long time. The real estate agent had a hard time selling it. something about a ghost story which surrounded
the house and the motel unit which stood
behind it.
The house is located on Canniff Rd, can you tell me about
that house and its' history.
The house used to be white and had a well in
front of it with a pool and tennis court along side of the house.
since then the
house has been painted blue and the well has been removed. I love the Catskills very much and
intended to fill my head with all knowledge of the
areas I find beautiful, can you please tell me a little about
the house I have
described.. Most recently I have been back and fourth looking at property and houses
to relocate from the city with my family and call The Catskills home.
Another memory which always pops up is a resort called the Jolly House, what has become of that I
do not find it anywhere when I was up, I believe that
was located in Leeds.
If you can tell me a little about my inquires I would mostly appreciate it,
thank you

I
was a resident of your small town from around 1975-1985. I'm 32 now and I still miss it every now and then.
I used to live in the upstairs
apartment of the big white house on the corner of Bross and Grove behind the elementary school.
Ethel Ruland used to own it. I'm sure she has
passed on. My best friends were Aaron Lewis and Pat Patterson
who used to live on the hill going up to the county farm (park), Adam and Grant
Gilbert who lived in Roundtop,
Michael and Mark Miller? who lived a few houses from me, Dion
Pisarri(sp?) who lived across the street
from the
firehouse and her cousin Kristen, and maybe a few others I've long forgotten.
The sheriff's name was Floyd. My favorite memories were
Halloween. It was a much safer, simpler world then
and the trees were just beautiful, the snow storm of '77 because the plows piled all the
snow across the street from my house, and going down to Woodstock Dam (that's what we called it)
during the summer. I almost drowned there.
Dion swam down and saved me. I remember when
they were building the library. Life was good then. Philip

I
am researching my family history and am seeking the obituary of Andrew Priputen, who died in
South Cairo in March 1966. I understand the local

Hi, I'm
searching for a Hispanic family I Visited in Cairo, New York in
1983. The gentleman in the family was a pastor of a Christian
resort
whom he either managed or owned the facility. He had a
wife and 4
children 2 sons & 2 Daughters. All I remember is
one of the daughters name to be Sandra- nickname sassy.
This girl took me
there to meet her family for a long weekend. My daughter & I had a
great time.
I remember the main house was white. The property
had small cabins & a small wooden, white church.
Can you please help locate or provide any information on
this loving
family for me?
Thank You, Mayra shiwnatm@mskcc.org
I'm
trying to obtain information about my grandmother's family. Some members of the
family lived in
Cairo from the 1840's until at least the 1920's, and my
grandmother spent most of the summers and
holidays of her youth there. The first
information we have is that my great, great grandparents
Charles McWilliams (b.
Ireland, 1816) and his wife Mary O'Hara McWilliams (b. Greenville, NY, 1822)
were living in Cairo by 1842, when their first child, Sarah, was born. They had
nine children, another of
whom was my great-grandfather, James E. McWilliams
(b.1857).
He left Cairo in adulthood, but several of his sisters (Lucretia, Hannah
Catherine, Eleanor and Alice)
remained in Cairo until their deaths. Alice, the
last of these unmarried sisters, died on June 21, 1924 in Cairo.
We have
pictures of the house my grandmother used to visit. By the 1930's (?) it
was deserted and I
suspect it no longer exists. One of the pictures has a note
about a highway moving closer to it, but we
have no idea where it was located,
and would be fascinated to find out. The sisters may have run the
house as a
boarding house.
If you've ever come across any of these names, or have any information about the
McWilliams family in Cairo,
I would very much appreciate it if you'd let me
know.
Thank you,
Deirdre Courtney-Batson pbatson@attglobal.net
I haven't been to the
Cairo Web Site in awhile - your new format looks great!
Hello there,
I grew up in Cairo, where I lived in till my early thirties, I know hundreds
of people there, But none of you Why ?, because I come from that other
Cairo, the one that is just over ten centuries young!
Did you know ?
That Cairo name -in Arabic "Al Qahira", was given to it by a
Cecilian guy
that used to be the army commander of a north African monarchy that ruled Egypt for few hundred years.
And he named the city after a bright star that
we today know as Mars !
I am so glad I can find so many other Cairo'ers through the world, hope you keep in touch to exchange
information, anecdotes and history about all
Cairo's everywhere. ONE day, I wish I can organize a
conference for either officials or
residents of all Cairo's by the feet of the great Pyramids of Egypt.
Have fun and god bless you,

Hello,
I enjoyed your website
and I am trying to find answers to some
genealogy questions. In 1904, Harriet Stanley Steele
and baby daughter Dorothy traveled to Cairo, NY to visit a grandmother. This grandmother
has to
be Sophia Deacon Stanley and her husband was James Stanley. I was wondering if there might be
town records of the year 1904 of people
living there in the late 1890's and early 1900's.
I have been told by family members that Sophia was a *real Yankee from upstate New York*.
The Steele family was living in New York City after 1900.
Simon Stanley, brick mason from Dublin, Ireland; his son James was
apprenticed to him as a brick mason; James married Sophia Deacon and their sons George and
James Stanley were apprenticed to their father.
The other surnames in this family are:
MATHEWS and WALLACE. James Mathews and Bridget Wallace both from Dublin, Ireland.
Thanks for your help or referral.

My husband and I are looking to relocate to the Greene

At the moment, I am trying to do some

My family and I have been living both in Cairo and in Long Island. We spend
our summers swimming
in the "Bridge Creek" Ira Vail and 23B
intersection. for many years. Recently we were told that there were
"water snakes" in
the creek. I'd supposed there were, but never saw one until this past weekend.
It
was a very thin and long snake (approx 12'' ) Have you any clue what types of snakes inhabit
the creek and if they should be of any concern.
Thanks in
advance! Jesse

Just contacted the Quilting Guild in Cairo to see if any of my
classmates were quilters now.. Since I've lost track of everyone since graduation --
there were only 28
of us -- I was wondering what happened to you all.
It must be an age thing -- but I would love to hear from you even if you aren't
quilters.
I was Jane Frere way back then and you can reach me at:

Back in the 1970s my family and I vacationed on several occasions in the Cairo
area. We visited
the Catskill Game Farm, and stayed at a place called Honey Hollow.
I am trying to find out if Honey Hollow stills exists. We stayed in a
"cabin" that was probably
a trailer home or a modular home, which
looked out over a large pond where we could swim,
fish and use a rowboat. My sisters and I are planning a return trip to Catskill Game Farm
with our own
families and would love to re-visit Honey Hollow. Can you help?
Thank you.

I visited your Cairo web page. I live in
Greenville.
Due to my wife's disability and need for another
income, I am currently looking for work
that can be done at home. This
can be computer work, proof reading, or "piece work" assembly or
crafts.
I will pickup and deliver. Do you know of anyone or any
business in the area that offers this
opportunity for employment or
contracting type of work?
I have answered many ads in the classifieds for
this type of work. They were all scams.
They all wanted me to
purchase a directory of potential nationwide business possibilities,
but do
not really supply the type of work opportunity I am looking for.
I would appreciate any information or direction to
find this type of work.
Thank
you DALE

Hi. I am a descendant of James
Barker. His daughter Sarah married Frederick Eiklor "Eckler."
They
are my G-G-G-G-Grandparents. I have two questions. Has anyone
found the names of the "tenants"
who accompanied James and his wife
Elizabeth on their way from England to Cairo.?
Does anyone know if
Frederick served in Captain DeBert's unit during the Revolution?

Visiting your website brought back some fond memories of Cairo. Back in 1971
(senior year of high school) my friends and I camped at a place called Creekside Campgrounds
(Sport Haven Airport). It was owned by a nice couple
named AL and Patty
(I can't remember their last name.) After a number of years and marriage and kids,
this same group of friends were reminiscing
about our senior-year camping trip and decided to
recreate it.
We eventually found Creekside and had such a great time that for the next six or
seven
years we made it an annual reunion there. I guess around the mid to late eighties we
were saddened to learn that Al was killed in a plane crash and
the campground was eventually closed.
We always did the same things each year: horseback riding at Balliwick, go-karts (2 places),
ice cream at Van's, swimming at Shinglekill falls.
Can you tell me anything about
the current status of this campground? Is it still closed? Did the property ever get sold?
Any info you can provide would
be appreciated. It would be great to have another reunion
trip after all these years.

I just bought 25 acres on
Ross Ruland Road near South Cairo, and I'm looking to put some
kind of
inexpensive home on it so I can spend weekends there this summer (I live
in Manhattan).
Later I may build something more permanent.
Do you know anyone who might have
a used mobile home for sale??
How would I find something like
that?

Morning
That is should you be checking your e-mail this morning. Please don't mind
my questions, I will shoot them off then with a brief rundown on my history
with Cairo/Freehold etc.
What is you name and if you come from the
"50ies" do we know each other? Most unlikely.
Could you
point me to or put me in contact with someone regarding the "40th"
reunion.
I stopped off last year and spent some time with Billy
O'Connell and Billy Fitzmorris but neither
one knew anyone to contact
regarding this years reunion.
I
visited your page last winter and meant to get back but didn't. I am so very
pleased at the
improvements since then and I will be back many times. Love the pictures and yes I do have some.
We just moved to Londonderry NH
and nothing is unpacked. We will talk.
My name is Alexander Hahnl (Alex).
Should
you know of the Circus people that used to live, in the "50ies", out on "32" 1
and 1/2 mile
before Freehold that's me/us. The Hanel troupe etc. I'm a very open person so
anything I say
you may share---.Now in contacting me. Please send all e-mail to Hahnl@bigfoot.com
A Very big Hello To Billy O'Connell, Billy Fitzmorris, Frank Schellhorn, Amy

My
family and I have just been invited back home to see my brother.
It's been about 5 years
since I've been there and just checking out your web
site, it makes me miss it all the more.
I cannot wait to get there
tomorrow.
You
can't always find Cairo on the map, but here it is on the
internet!! It was fun exploring the pages and checking out the
e-mail responses.
Hi to all you Cairo Graduates! Why not log on to

Do the

Hi
I'm looking to find either a Polish area up by Cairo or Albany. My
Aunt just opened up a hotel
(The Best Western) off the thruway by you guys and
she is of Polish descent and she would like to
find a church and some store
perhaps. Friends of mine moved to Cairo a while back, Bronek Budz,
with his family (I went to school with his sons here in Maspeth) and he is Polish
and he owns some sort of Lumber yard up in Cairo.
Any help that you can give me would be great.
Thanks

Hi
Everyone:
Both my wife and I graduated from Cairo High School in the 60's and we wanted to thank the
Cairo webmasters for creating the wonderful site.
We are now residing in South Carolina and
often return to Cairo to see our
few remaining relatives and friends. Our two children are now
married
and living in the south, so other than vacations to the Catskills, it is unlikely
we'll ever get back on a permanent basis. Love to hear from
some of the old (only in calendar years!)
classmates and friends.
Sincerely, Bob Moran and Claudia (Merwin) Moran.
Hello
my friend
I
came across your international web site as I was looking through;
coppernic.com
I
thought it was Cairo, Egypt! However,
it's looks spot-on so far, and before I
proceed further,
I thought
I'd bung you an e-mail. I am going to off now old bean to have a look around your site,
so before
I do, would you kindly have a look at
my international web site on Egypt? (Cairo included).
Whoops,
I forgot to add my link: www.egypt.cwc.net
Write
back please with your comments, as will I when I have finished looking around.

Houghtaling , Class of 66,, currently residing in the San Diego area (as I have for the last 30 years)
would like to hear from any friends or
classmates still above the sod
( and any below the sod for that matter).
I will be a frequent visitor to Cairo this year and would like
to hook to talk,
golf, or whatever.. e mail ERRN95@aol.com. thanks.
Thanks for
the great web site on my home town, I live in Texas now but Cairo will always be home.
I come home every summer, partly to escape
the heat but mostly to catch up on the home front.
I was saddened to see so many trees destroyed by the storm this spring, but at least the
houses
we spared. Keep up the good work on the site.

The site gets better every time I look at it. You are doing
a wonderful
job. Makes me proud to be a part of Cairo as it's going through it's
changes. I love reading the comments from all the former Cairo residents and visitors
who have found the web site from their homes around the
country. Keep up the good work
and thanks once more for all your energy and efforts.

I used to
live in Cairo in the 70's thru 1982. I met and got to know a lot of
wonderful people
and had the privilege of calling them my friends and my
family. Cairo was (is) a small close knit town ,
a place where
"everyone knew your name". I have moved a lot and lived in a
lot of cities
and have never felt the attachment anywhere else that I had in Cairo.
fond memories
and I still feel a little homesick even after all these years.

keep up the page and thanks for your time
in doing that, it is wonderful!!!!!!!!

(Viscovitch) ps. hi to
everyone that is still up there
Hi, I really enjoyed the
Cairo website. I am looking for some history
of Cairo; especially people who lived there in
1904-05 and maybe later?
I am researching family members
and the only lead I have to go on is from a baby book ;
"when six weeks old
Dorothy (Stanley Steele) went to Cairo, NY for three weeks." I am
thinking her great
grandmother DEACON was living there in 1904-05. All I know about the
DEACONS are
that Sophia DEACON married James STANLEY and three children were born
to this union;
George, Harriet and James Stanley. James the father was a brick
mason
and his sons were apprenticed to their father just like James Sr.
was apprenticed to his
father and back before coming to America. I
have been told that the DEACON grandmother
or great grandmother was a
"real Yankee from upstate New York" (whatever that means)
Would appreciate any contacts with someone who
knows Cairo history. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks,
Janelle MW Warden

Frank & I started our
business in NYC in Queens in 1968...and relocated to Cairo in 1986..
we had our home

present after
much renovation we opened in 1990... Our three sons
have grow (one married here in Cairo)
and over the years of
school and working in the family business have also purchased
homes
of their own here as well. I see a bright future for Cairo

As a former resident of Acra I

Was wondering
if you'd link it in on your web site (which is really great by
the way!)
.I lived in
Cairo up until 1980. Then I moved to Florida. I haven't seen these people in 20 years.
I was

I have been thinking about Cairo
A lot. I bet its

HI, I MOVED
FROM CAIRO IN 1979, TO TEXAS, AND I AM ENJOYING LOOKING AROUND AT
EVERYTHING.
SEE HOW MUCH HAS GROWN IN THE YEARS I'VE BEEN GONE. I WAS
BORN & RAISED IN CAIRO,
MY PARENTS HOME WAS NEXT TO THE POST OFFICE, IT HAS SINCE BEEN SOLD
AFTER
MY FATHERS DEATH.
ANYWAY,
IT'S NICE THAT I FOUND THIS WEB SITE, AND THANKS FOR
ALL

... a little history here, I live (grew up)
in Cairo, 1966-1976.
It is the
best of every world. I was born in NYC, and now live just outside
in NJ. If I could,
I'd have my family grow up in Cairo. I learned
my values there, had my heart broken, etc.
I have to say,
I'm surprised Cairo has a web page. When I lived there, we were
always ten
years behind the scenes. But that's what made
Cairo, Cairo!
I used to
ride my motorcycle at the county farm, pumped gas for Roy Miller ( who didn't
?)
God, it's New
years Day, and a flood of memories are exploding over me! How is
Shinglekill falls?
The roller rink?
How are the McManus's, ?
they really
helped shape my life! Some guy
named UNK Slater, from Victory Markets?
Hey
Unk, I'm
glad you did what you did!
To all the
guys I graduated with, Happy 2000!
Would love to
hear from you!
Cairo! good
luck!
Wow this is wonderful !! I grew up in Cairo.
I spent my first 10 years in Cairo (Round
Top).
I attended
Cairo Central School from 1964 thru 1970 (K-6)
Your web site
looks great. Can't wait to go thru all of it.
Am a former resident of Cairo, now living in
California.
My son found
the site and e-mailed the address to me. Many thanks for all your
hard work
it is
wonderful to take a 'stroll' through town again, brings back many
memories.
Will be
visiting Cairo online from now on.........
Again, thanks
for a trip down memory lane.

The site looks wonderful.
The promotion
dept. had asked if the town had a website.
They wanted
to list the web address when they list Market Days.
I proudly
left a message with the address.
Keep up the
good work!
