Even before I first set foot in Bedok South Secondary school, I already had the intention of joining the Chinese Orchestra as my CCA. I join Chinese Orchestra because I have a huge passion in music. During my days as a member, I was very committed. I got to know everyone and it was through the harsh training that we found fun together. Life as a Chinese Orchestra member soon gave way to more responsibility. We have to enter the Singapore Youth Festival, What's more we have to get a gold award. As during the last five years, we have been getting gold award. My daily schedule was virtually overturned. No longer could I spend hours on the computer or television. Any spare time I had to practice my instrument, "Pipa". Our instructor made a uniform for us. It was a red ugly "Cheong Sam". The days came, it was very nerve wracking for us to wait for our turn. But during our wait, I found that our uniform is not really that ugly compared to other schools. Finally, it was time for us to proceed to the auditorium. My hands was all sweaty as I waited for the conductor to prompt us. As we have only booked the bus until 4p.m, we have to go back to school first without knowing the result. The moment we reached the school, we received a call from our conductor announcing that we have won the Gold award.We dance on the carpark right on the spot. You can't imagine how happy we are!
As we have won the gold award for the Singapore Youth Festival 1999, we were selected to perform for the Millennium Concert. It was a real honour to to be able to perform with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra as they are all professional. For the concert we have to practice about more than 20 songs. It was really hard work for us moreover we have to get all the fingering right. As all these song require certain specialised skills, I have to pick up these skills up within 2 months. Moreover, I have to spend my millennium at the Singapore Indoor Stadium instead of going to Suntec City counting down. However, I think that it was really a good experience for me as it was one of those once in a life time thing.
