The planet Gor was created by the writer John Norman. It is a world that is similar in shape and size to Earth, though the gravity is less. It is located on the other side of the Sun in our solar system. It is controlled by an alien race called the Priest-Kings. The Priest-Kings allow only certain technologies to exist on Gor. For instance, electricity and weapons such as guns and explosives are forbidden under penalty of death. Therefore, only archaic Medieval type weapons are used.

The society of Gor is very different from that of Earth. The population is divided into Castes, both High and Low. The Castes are distinguished by the colors they wear (for instance, Warriors always wear Red and Assassins always wear Black). On Gor there are also two very distinct groups of people, Freepeople and slaves. Slavery is a legal and thriving institution on Gor. Slaves are treated as property, to be done with as their owner chooses. It should be noted that slaves do not belong to Castes.

Gor is a harsh world, where only the strong survive. There are many customs and rituals that are part of everyday Gorean life. If you are new to Gor, you will find us to be very suspicious of you. You will not be openly welcomed by all until you prove that you are Gorean in our eyes. The word for stranger in Gorean is the same as the word for enemy, so be cautious. The way you do that is to be respectful of our ways and watch carefully what happens. Keeping your mouth shut at first is advisable, at least until you know what you are doing.
