A day at SLNS

0700 – The barn starts opening. Horses are fed and groomed. The horses that need to be turned out are, and we begin to clean stalls.

0800 – Riders start showing up. The racehorses are taken to the track and worked. Young horses are lunged, and older horses are worked on the flat.

1000 – Jumps are set up in one of the arenas, and the hunters, jumpers, and eventers are worked. In good weather, barrels and poles are set up in an outdoor arena and the game horses are worked.

1200 – Jumps are dismantled and game equipment set up in bad weather. Riders begin to eat lunch.

1300 – Anything that wasn’t attended to before is done now. Schedule is caught up in case something was delayed. Horses in training are given additional work. Some riders begin to leave while more begin to arrive.

1600 – Lessons commence. On non-lesson days, trail rides are taken. If we have a show the next day, we start preparing equipment.

2000 – Horses are brought in and fed. Stalls are touched up. Aisles are swept and tackrooms cleaned. Arenas are raked.

2100 – Stable is locked for the night.

A week at SLNS

Sunday – Our day off (as much as you can get when you own horses!). Other than feeding and grooming, the only horses worked are those that have to be. If we competed on Saturday, we clean the trailer.

Monday – Trail checks are performed. Instead of normal exercise, most of our horses are taken out on the trail. Any obstacles that aren’t supposed to be there are removed, and bridges are checked. The branches that need to be trimmed are.

Tuesday – Lessons are given.

Wednesday – After sweeping the aisles, we hose them off. Floors get scrubbed. Bedding is changed in all stalls.

Thursday – Prep time for any Friday shows. Lessons are given.

Friday – Prep for Saturday shows.

Saturday – Tack is cleaned, the tack room refrigerators cleaned out, driving carts washed and inspected, and any work not done over the week taken care of. Bedding is completely changed in all stalls.
