Operation Guarding Liberty
Operation Guarding Liberty was held at Freedom Corner in Cape
Girardeau, Mo. on 9-11-2004. This special event was to honor those who lost their lives
in the bombing of the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon on 9-11-2001. This event
was made possible because oflocal area businesses and the donations they made. The
event was held from sunup to sundown with a changing of the guard every 30 minutes.
Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson kicked off the event with her recollection of her daily
events on 11 Sept 2001.After Ms. Emerson's moving speech the order was then given by
Ron Acord, member of the Cpl. Mason O. Yarbrough Detachment #1081, to post the
guard.During the walking of the century's, the Cape Girardeau Fire Department
stopped to watch, and also laid their own memorial to their fallen comrades
at the base of the Statue of Liberty. To the onlookers that was a very
emotional gesture as to what the day meant to them. Below are some pictures from the
event, and we hope to do another next year. We all want to say thank you
to the businesses who made this happen.
