Darren Hayes began his music career as voice of the multi-million selling pop duo Savage Garden.

Savage Garden's self-titled debut album (1997) and their sophomore album Affirmation (1999) sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Savage Garden split in 2000 and Darren decided to persue a solo career. His debut solo album Spin was released in 2002.

Spin sold less than 2 million albums and was considered a flop by many.

The disappointment of Spin hit Darren hard. After taking a break from the music scene, Darren eventually began to write songs again and found himself working with his close friend Robert Conley. The music that they produced together would eventually become Darren's sophomore solo album The Tension and the Spark.

The Tension and the Spark was released in many countries in the fall of 2004.
