The Armor Of God

If you would get your Bibles ready we'll begin.

  • Quick Q & A

Q: Why do I need my Bible for an online study?

A: I'm not going to type out every verse I use or reference to. Even if I did you should still read it for yourself so you cannot claim that I lied or mislead you in any way. Also, when I do write something out it will be from King James, some people don't like reading that version.

As we all know the Armor Of God is crucial in our survival in the war against the Devil. The Romans always wore armor of some sort when fighting the Greek, the Turks, or whoever. They realized that to win a battle they must protect their bodies from the enemy. God is the originator of this idea. He looked ahead for us and designed an armor especially for his people. God has made this armor available for us and shows us exactly how to get it. If you read his word in Ephesians 6:11 where it begins talking of the armor, you will find what pieces of armor are offered (God doesn't force us to take up his armor) and why we need them. I will break it down into each piece and describe it as best I can.

  • The Purpose of the Armor

    Eph. 6:10-13 -

    10. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

    11. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

    12. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

    13. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

God is telling us to take strength in him, using him as our armor, our protection. 'We do not fight against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.' The 'ruler of darkness' or Satan is the one that we are fighting against, not our fellow man. For us to stand up to Satan unarmored, without God, we would lose. However, God tells us to take up the whole armor, or the whole protectors, so that we can stand and face the Devil head-on. In verse 13 God is asking us to use him as our armor, or protector.

  • The First Piece

Eph. 6:14 - Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth,

Put on the belt of truth. In the Roman army the belt was the center piece of their armor. The belt is what held the other pieces in place so they didn't fall loose in the midst of battle. This holds true with God. The greek word for truth translates to "speak (tell) truth" The meaning in this is more than not telling lies, but speaking Christ. In John 14:6 Jesus say, I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life. This means that Jesus is the center of our armor/protection. We must follow his example and speak his word and hide it within our hearts to be protected against Satan's attacks. John 3:21 - But he that doeth TRUTH cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. So we need Truth to enter into Heaven, for truth is of God and his Son, and only through Jesus may we enter his kingdom.
Truth not only pertains to fact or reality but it deals with the ability for us as Christians to be faithful to God and to ourselves through our beliefs. In Christ, we live under His truth, which is not only believing that He is the son of God but the truth or fact that His WAYS are true, just, and faithful. Jesus answered," I am the way the truth and the life,".... When we read the words of our Lord and savior, we begin to see that there were many times in which he began sentances saying," I tell you the truth,". Not only are His ways and teachings true, He was the only human being who could ever claim to be and know complete truth because He came from it (John3:13).

  • The Second Piece

    Eph. 6:14 - Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

The Romans used the brestplate to protect themselves from arrows, swords, and axes. This kept the main part of their body unharmed. God uses this as well. Our brestplate protects us from the firey darts of the Devil. However, this brestplate is one of Righteousness. In greek righteousness translates to equity of character or acts. It is one thing to look like a soldier, or in this case a Christian, but another to act like one. Our actions must reflect our Christian character. This brestplate protects us, and shows who we are, as we instill justice in the world. In Isaiah 59:15-17 it talks of God being displeased because he didn't see any justice so he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. Then he exacts his vengence on Zion. We displease God when we aren't righteous, or right with him, and showing it.

  • The Third Piece

    Eph. 6:15 - And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

The Romans used boots so that they could go on any terrain without harming their feet. Their boots were usually equipped with spike on the bottom so that they wouldn't lose thier footing. God wants us to to go out into the world with the gospel of peace prepared, in other words with his word on our lips. The gospel of peace refers to God's word, and feet used to be the main way of transportation, so again, go out with his word. We must follow our feet as a guide as to where God wants us to spread his word. Romans 10:15 says, And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! When we put these boots we are being sent to spread his word. Also, we use these boots in troubled times. When we are lost, in trouble or at a cross road in our life, instead of slipping or backsliding, dig the spikes of your boots into the ground. In other words, plant yourself firm in the WORD of God, and let him LEAD you in the right way.

  • The Fourth Piece

Eph. 6:16 - Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The Romans had wooden shields with layers of animal hides on them. They would soak the hides in water so that if the enemy sent a fire arrow at them it'd go out as soon as it hit instead of igniting the shield, and making it useless. We take up God's shield to quench Satan's attacks against us. Our shield is one of faith, which in greek translates to reliance upon Christ for salvation. We must place our trust, our faith in God that he will save us, or protect us. Prov. 3:5 tells us to TRUST in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Don't go based on what you THINK you know when God, our saviour, creator of the universe, is right beside us letting us use him for answers. We must put fully our faith in him whether we're sure or not of the outcome, because we live by FAITH and not by sight. If we put our faith in God he will meet all of our needs. The Romans also understood that they had to maintain their shields. Everyday they would soak the hides and laquer the shield so that it stayed strong and sturdy and would not fall apart or break. We must do this as well. Everyday put our trust in God, and all our needs will be fulfilled.

  • The Fifth Piece

Eph. 6:17 - And take the helmet of salvation,

The Roman helmet covered their head fully, with ear guards and a full visor. This protected their weakest body part and kept it safe from the enemy. God's helmet does the same. It protects our ears from lies, and things we aren't supposed to listen to. The visor comes down to protect our eys to make sure we know what we are seeing and do not let anything not of God in our view. The visor also follows down to the chin protecting our mouths from what we say, so that only good things, Godly things fall from our tounges. Our helmet is better than the Romans though, ours is one of Salvation. 1 Thess. 5:8-9 tells us, "But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ," Salvation is the deliverance from danger or difficulty. Deliverance from the power and penalty of sin. We must be saved to recieve salvation. This will protect us from sin, and help us not to sin by protecting our gates, eyes, ears, and mouth.

  • The Sixth Piece

Eph. 6:17 - And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The Romans main and most powerful weapon was of course the sword. Our sword is the sharpest two-edged sword ever weilded. This verse tells us that God's word is the most powerful weapon that we have. Like the Romans trained with their swords daily so must we read, or train, in God's word. Heb. 4:12 says, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." The sword of the spirit, is the weapon of power and authority, sharper than any double edged sword, used to wound and kill our spiritual (unseen) enemies, in a Spiritual War.

  • How to recieve God's Armor

Eph. 6:1-9 tells us to obey our parents. Now if you're like me you wonder why God had this put in the begining and The Armor Of God in the middle. After praying and searching I found that it makes sense. When the Romans joined the army they weren't issued their armor yet. They had to prove that they could obey their leaders ('parents') and follow their orders blindly. We must also obey our parents and leaders to show God that we are worth to don his armor. Matt. 15:4 says, "For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death." If we don't honor our leaders then well will be stripped of our armor and let die. Like the Romans, God shows no mercy for insubordination.

  • I have the Armor now What?

Eph. 6:18-24 talks of prayer for our leaders. We must pray for our leaders so that they may take us in the right direction and do not lead us astray. An army without a leader is chaos. We must take care of our leaders and follow them without question. Brother Duane taught this in youth class, and Pastor Rhodes on Wednesday nights. They weren't telling us these things just to get more prayers directed towards them, they know that their leaders are very important.

    Q: But I'm a leader what now?

A: Pray for your leader, don't just get lazy because you are now a leader.

Brother Duane is a leader, but still has a leader the he prays for (at least he'd better). Our leaders are priceless, God didn't send them to us for no reason.

  • Closing

I hope that you've gotten something from this study. I've enjoyed writing this for you. I wish I could get paid for this, if I had a job I'd quit it just to be able to write these for you all. Remember to sharpen your swords and polish your armor everyday and stand against the dark forces of the world.
