A Tribute To A Confederate Veteran



Capt. George Robert Brooks

Captain George Robert Brooks was born on 30 Sep 1838, the son of Thomas Brooks, born in Culpepper, Virginia and Elizabeth Bullard also of Virginia. Thomas was living in Callaway County, Missouri prior to Missouri's statehood (1817) and was one of the earliest settlers. George was one of 12 children, 2 of his brothers are confirmed to have fought for the CSA, and a third brother is believed to have fought for the CSA.

The following is Capt. Brooks' Military Service Information.

G. R. Brooks, Pvt. Missouri State Guard under General John B. Clark- Enlisted May 1861 and served 6 months.

G. R. Brooks, 1st Lt., D. W. Craig’s Co., under Porter, enlisted July 1, 1862. Appointed Captain August 1, 1862.

George R. Brooks, Captain, Company H, 9th Regiment Missouri Volunteers Infantry. Colonel John B. Clark, Commanding, enlisted August 30, 1863 at Little Rock, AR. Elected Captain January 13, 1864.

G. R. Brooks surrendered May 26, 1865 at Shreveport, LA. Paroled as Captain at Alexandria, La. June 7, 1865.

Capt. Brooks died 8 Jan 1908. He is buried at the Brooks Family Cemetery in Callaway County, Missouri.
