IRC Help

Welcome to IRC (Internet Relay Chat) help on TripleTriadHelp.com! This new addition to the TTHelp site is intended to help all users of the channel #tripletriad.com to get to grips with IRC commands. I am not intending to give out instructions on how to create aliases, remote scripts etc. but just to give out some general help on how things work. For all of the newbies of course. We love newbies on this site...

Basic Commands

The basic IRC commands are boring but necessary

Join a channel
To join a channel, type:
/join followed by the channel. For example, if you typed
/join #tripletriad.com
...you would join the channel #tripletriad.com! Easy, wasn't it!

Leave a channel
This one allows you to leave one channel only if you are talking in multiple channels simultaneously. Just type:
/part #channel, where #channel is the name of the channel that you want to leave. For example, typing
/part #tripletriad.com would make you leave the channel #tripletriad.com

Disconnect from IRC
This is the one to use when your dinner is ready... To completely disconnect from your chat server, type in:
/quit
For those of you who want to be really flashy, you can type a quit message straight after this command, and that will be displayed, for example
/quit See you tomorrow
would show other users a message something along the lines of
*** NanakiXII has quit IRC (See you tomorrow)

In-Chat Commands

I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked about these!

Expressing an action
To tell other people what you are doing, the command is
/me
For example, if you wanted to say that you hit your computer, you would type
/me hits her computer
and the resulting display on the screen would be
* NanakiXII hits her computer
Don't forget to talk in the third person, or the sentence will not make sense.

Changing your name
If you are a bit fed up with your name, you can change it using the command
/nick
For example, to change your name to AgeSolo, you would write
/nick AgeSolo
and the result would be your displayed name changing, and a message saying
*** NanakiXII is now known as AgeSolo

Private Messages
There are two types of private messages (PM's) - those which appear in the main chat window, and those which appear in a new window. The first type can be started using the command
/msg followed by your message, for example the command
/msg AgeSolo Hiya would start off a conversation within the main chat window with AgeSolo, and your first words would be "Hiya".
If you wanted to talk to someone privately, but in a separate window, you would do exactly the same thing, but the command /query would be used instead. For example
/query AgeSolo Hiya
would have the same result as above, it would just be displayed in a different window. Having said all of that, you can also bring up a separate PM window by double clicking on someone's name, and this is probably easier.

Finding out about someone
If you are particularly nosy, you can use the command
/whois to find out information about someone. If you were to type
/whois NanakiXII
then a reply would come up (probably in your status window) telling you their IP, and possibly a name and email address - who knows!

Setting your status to Away
This displays your message to anyone who PM's or does a "/whois" on you. If you type in
/away gone to lunch
then the message "gone to lunch" will be automatically displayed for you. When you come back from whatever you are doing, type in
/away but leave the rest blank, and your status will go back to normal.

And finally...

In IRC land, nobody can hear you scream (unless you have a voice)!
You may have seen people on the channel #tripletriad.com typing in !voice and been puzzled. Don't be! The voice command adds a + sign to your name in the sidebar, but more importantly allows you to speak if the channel is moderated so that only channel ops can talk. This hardly ever happens on #tripletriad.com, so typing this command is a bit pointless, but at least you now know what is going on.
