NanakiXII ^."".^ ----------------------------------------------------- This FAQ DOES NOT contain any main game walkthroughs! ----------------------------------------------------- Contents: 1) Chocobos - Catch, Breed, Race - Full Guide 2) Enemy Skills 3) Limits and character Weapons 4) Materia 5) Secret Characters --------------------------------------------- 1. Chocobos - Catch, Breed, Race - Full Guide --------------------------------------------- Time taken: 2 hours * Chocobo equipment You can only rent chocobo stables once you have the Highwind. To rent them, go to the chocobo farm on the South East of the Eastern Continent (near Midgar) and talk to Choco Bill in the main house (on the left). You may find it interesting to note that the chocobo pen is now empty, there is a chocobo lure materia to the very right of the pen and once you have rented a stable, you will always enter the chocobo farm from the left entrance (by the barn.) Anyway, rent at least four stables at 10,000 Gil a throw. This may sound extravagant but believe me, you're probably going to need the full six by the time you get a gold one! Before you start chocobo hunting, you'll need some basic equipment - a chocobo lure materia, some high level magic and some greens! Buy 10 Gysahi greens from Choco Billy (they're the cheapest), equip your chocobo lure materia and hope your magic is up to it! First of all you will need to know that chocobos are not all good ones, here's the definitive guide: Location Enemies Rating Gold Saucer Behind 1 or 3 flapbeats Average Gold Saucer In front of 2 flapbeats Good Gold Saucer Spencers Good Gold Saucer Harpy Not bad Mideel Spirals Great Mideel Head Hunters Not bad Chocobo ranch Any enemy Poor Icicle area Jumping Wonderful Icicle area Wolves Average * Method for capturing chocobos You will also need to know the tactics used to capture chocobos. When you get to the chocobo tracks (see above guide for places), you will need to run up and down with your materia equipped to lure out the chocobo. It may not work first time, if it has worked, you will hear the chocobo tune instead of the normal battle tune. On the first person's turn, throw a Gysahi green at the chocobo - this will hopefully keep it quiet until the end of the battle. Once this is safely done, pick your highest level spell (but NOT an all spell e.g. Ultima) and use the cursor to point it at one enemy. If there is more than one enemy, get another person to specifically point a different spell at the other enemy. Use ONE spell per enemy, because if this kills them and you have instructed the next member to cast another spell at the same enemy, the automatic cursor will make you attack the chocobo and frighten it away. If this does not kill all enemies, repeat the one spell process until they are all dead. If the chocobo is not one that you want, either run away (R1 and L1) or attack it. * Which chocobos do I collect? First go to the Gold Saucer area and collect two 'Good' chocobos (with Spencers etc.) Don't worry about getting off them - if you have rented the stables correctly, Cloud will give you the option to send them back to the chocobo ranch or release them - choose to send them back. Then, go to Mideel and capture two 'Great' chocobos. Send these back as well. Since you cannot send more than four back, you had better go back and sort out the pen allocation. Before you go into the ranch, and between penning each chocobo, save your game. This will enable you to determine the gender of your chocobos correctly. First put in a good chocobo (talk to Choco Billy about moving chocobos) and note down whether it was male or female. Then put in the next good chocobo and hope for the opposite sex. If it is not, you can reset (all shoulder buttons, START and SELECT) and keep trying. Do the same for the Great chocobos. Now you should go back to the Highwind, save, and travel to the Northern Continent, Icicle area and collect a wonderful chocobo. Leave this in the outside pen for the time being. If you are really hard up and know you do not want to capture any more chocobos, you can now sell your chocobo lure materia as your capturing days are over. * How do I breed them? To successfully obtain coloured chocobos, you need to feed them well, race them a lot and breed them correctly. Travel to the Northern Continent where you should find a small patch of grass with a house. Enter (talk to the chocobo for an enemy skill materia) and talk to the old man -he is the Chocobo Sage! Ask to buy something and buy 26 Sylkis greens at 5,000 Gil each. (You can ask him for information, but he only releases it after key events in the game, so it is quicker to use this guide.) While you are here, fight the Vlakorados (red dinosaur) three times and steal three Carob nuts. Also go to the small forested island to the top right of the map and fight goblins to steal one Zeio nut. Return to the ranch and feed your two 'Good' choc's 7 greens each and your 'Great' choc's 6 greens each. Now you need to race them... * Racing Chocobos Go to the Chocobo square and talk to Ester who is standing by the staffroom in a pink dress. You may remember her from when you were in Corel Prison. She will ask you which one you want to ride, and which course (short or long.) Occasionally, if Tifa or Cid are in your party, they will ask you if they can ride. You only get a prize if you come first, and you can choose from GP or an item that is displayed on the race cards at the beginning and end of every race. If you aren't doing very well, you can cheat by pressing R1 and R2 down whilst racing to gain stamina when not running. To move up a rank, your chocobo has to win 3 races in its current rank. You cannot go higher than S rank. If you win a lot of races on S rank, Ester will award you with a Cat's bell, Precious watch, Championship Belt and Chocobracelet for being such a good jockey. * Breeding Chocobos Continued Now go to the Gold Saucer and race them to A Class. You may be able to reach S if you really want, but it is a waste of money as you will need to feed them many more greens. The minimum requirement is class A for your 'Greats' and class B for your 'Goods', but class A in both gives you more chance. Once the choc's are at a satisfactory standard, go back to the ranch again and breed the male 'Good' with the female 'Great' and vice versa. Use a carob nut each time. If you are lucky, the MGood/FGreat cross should produce a green chocobo and the MGreat/FGood cross a blue chocobo. Save your game in between mating as you also need two choc's of the opposite sex. (N.B. At this point, you will have had to rent out all six stables to fit in the new babies. If you are seriously hard up for cash, you can only rent the four and capture one great and one good at a time, feed them, race them, breed them and release them, but this is a bit of a pain, so I would rent the six.) Once your four yellows have produced the goods, they are no longer useful, so wave goodbye. With the two coloured ones now left, feed and race them, this time to S class. I couldn't get my blue to S class so A is OK, but S would be better. Use a carob nut again, then save your game after naming and taking note of the sex of your new baby, who should be black. Now it's time to bring in your 'Wonderful' from outside. Make sure it is of the opposite sex to your black before feeding, racing and breeding as before. You should have no trouble reaching S class this time, and it is definitely needed. When you mate the choc's, use the Zeio nut. If all is well, you should have a shining gold choc waiting the next morning for all your time, effort and money. You can keep the other choc's if you want or release them or breed them to get other choc's with great racing ability, it's up to you. * Beating Joe and Teioh (chocobo jockeys) Teioh, the black chocobo is very annoying if you are trying to win a lot of races on S class. He always has better stats than you, even if you are using a well-fed gold - not fair! Start off the race by sprinting, remembering to hold down R1 and R2 as well as Circle so you gain stamina. Watch the stamina bar in the bottom left corner of the screen, and when it gets almost empty, stop sprinting and walk. Keep pressing R1 and R2, and as soon as you have a small amount of stamina left, sprint until the bar is critical again. Repeat this process. Teioh should not catch you, but if he is getting near you at the end, do not sprint until the last minute so you can build up a tiny bit of stamina. If you run out of stamina, your chocobo will plod along like a tortoise; so don't throw it away right at the end. * So, er, what's the point then? The point of breeding chocobos is that you can get materia which make completing the game a lot less hassle and a lot more fun. It also makes defeating the weapons possible. Below are listed the goodies which are get-able with the aid of your feathered friends (cliche or what!) Mime - Mimes last action using no MP (or repeat limit!) Found with a green/black/gold choc on the Wutai continent, the cave on a peninsula. HP<>MP - Switches HP and MP levels over (i.e.massive MP, low HP) Found with a green/black/gold choc North of Corel in a cave near the mudswamps. Quadra Magic - Casts spell or summon (not KOR) 4 times Found with a black/gold choc in a cave near Mideel. Knights of the Round - Summon spell with major damage Found with a gold choc on a round island near the Zeio nut island in a cave. * Is there anything else I need to know? Chole - you can find out the best choc's in your stable from Chole, the farm hand in the chocobo stables. She will tell you who sprints the fastest, who is the most intelligent, who has the most stamina and who runs the fastest. She also notes down what the chocobo sage has told you. The message about the white chocobo liking to be scratched behind its ears is useful in Mideel, so take note. Blue choc's can travel on shallow (light blue) water and land Green choc's can travel on mountains and land Black chocs can do everything blue and green choc's can do Gold choc's can go anywhere (including ocean -dark blue) Chocobos can be very temperamental. If your choc decides to weave about all over the place in the chocobo races, try feeding it some more greens to improve its intelligence level. ------------------- 2. Enemy Skills ------------------- * To get the skills... The usual manner of getting the enemy skills is to fight the monster described and manipulate it (do not let any other characters attack it when it has been successfully manipulated.) When it is the turn of the person who has manipulated it, a list of attacks will come up, choose the enemy skill described and use it on your party. Some creatures cannot be manipulated so you will have to wail until they cast it on you. Others you will have to manipulate as they will not cast healing spells on you. You may find that a hypnocrown accessory increases your manipulation chances, and do remember to wear your ribbon for some of the the more degrading enemy skills. One last note - you will not get to keep the enemy skill if you run away from the battle so equip some strong materia to finish the monster off! Enemy Skills Disc 1 Magic Hammer Manipulate the razor weeds in the Wutai continent (the ones who always use Spaz voice.) Takes away 100MP from opponent (if they have that much left) and gives it to your character. Big Guard Manipulate the Beach Plugs on the beach near Gongaga Town. Casts Barrier, MBarrier and Haste on the whole party. Aqualung Fight the Harpy around ther Gold Saucer quicksand area or fight Jenova LIFE at the end of the disc. Water based attack that does about 5000 points of damage depending on creature's resistance. Beta Fight the Midgar Zolem on the swamp area near the chocobo farm once you have more HP's. Fire based attack that is similar to Aqualung on damage. Trine Fight the Materia Keeper on Mount Nibel or fight Godo on the top floor of the Pagoda. Lightning based attack. As for Beta and Aqualung. White Wind Fight the Zemzelett around the Junon Area (he looks like a cactus) and manipulate him. Some HP restored and all status ailments gone (e.g. poison). Frog Song In the forests near Cosmo Canyon, fight the Touch Me frogs, often accompanied by Gagaihandi monsters. Turns the enemy into a frog or misses. Death Force Fight the giant turtle (Adamantaimai) on the Wutai continent - manipulate him. Stops your party member from dying through sudden death or condemnation (e.g. the Joker card from the death dealer.) Flame Thrower In the Mythril Mine, manipulate the flying dragon. Attacks one enemy with a stream of fire for moderate damage. Matra Magic Around Midgar City, fight the Custom Sweepers. They can be manipulated even though they are robots, strange! Fires a stream of rockets at your opponents. Damage as for Flame thrower. Death Sentence In the Gi Tribe fight the monsters (not the worms) and you can manipulate them. Allows you to condemn an enemy - a countdown will start over their head. If it reaches 0, they will die. L4 Suicide Go to Bone Village, fight the Trickplays (they look like squirrels) but you can't manipulate them. Any enemy whose level is a multiple of four will lose nearly all their HP. ???? Fight the monsters which look like scales in the Shinra Mansion. You can't manipulate them. A weight hits your enemy and does them damage equal to the amount you have already received that battle. Enemy Skills Disc 2 Magic Breath In the caves around Gaea's Cliff, fight the giant scorpion creature. Fire, Ice, Lightning damage, as for Trine etc. Goblin Punch Go to the North East of the World map to a small chain of islands with a forest. Fight the goblins in this forest and manipulate them. You can also steal Zeio nuts from them. A physical attack which is moderately powerful. Bad Breath Fight the Malboro on the outside of Gaea's Cliff. Make sure you are wearing a ribbon unless you want the whole party to be poisoned, silenced, small sleeping frogs! Chocobuckle Go to the Chocobo farm and buy a Mimmett Greens (1500 Gil). Now travel to the chocobo tracks near Mideel. Encounter a chocobo and use the greens on it then kill of al but one of the other enemies. Now use L4 suicide enemy skill and the chocobo will use the chocobuckle on the person who used the L4 Suicide. A chocobo bounces on your enemy's head for moderate damage. Enemy Skills Disc 3 Angel Whisper Fight the Jemnezmy woman in a bikini while on the right path in the Northern Cave. Revives dead characters, restores HP, clears up status ailments (e.g. poison.) Dragon Force Fight the Dark Dragon on the first part of the Northern Cave (before you pick a path.) Increases Magic and Attack ratings. L5 Death Fight the parasites in the Northern Cave. You can manipulate them. Enemies whose levels are multiples of 5 are killed. Laser Fight the same Dark Dragon as for Dragon Force. Does large amount of physical damage to your opponent. Roulette Fight the death dealer on the right hand path of the Northern Cave. Wear a Safety Bit! Kills off one person at random, beware, it could be an ally! Pandora's Box Get this from the Dragon Zombie on the rocks before the last boss. Physical damage on all enemies. As Laser. Shadow Flare Get this from the Dragon Zombie (as for Pandora's box) or Safer Sephiroth, although it's a bit late by then! Finding secret characters ---------------------------- * Finding Yuffie As soon as you have Cid and the Tiny Bronco, go to ony forested area on the World Map and run around for a bit. (You may find using Luck Source and Luck Plus materia help.) You are looking for Yuffie, otherwise entitled Mystery Ninja. Once you find her, beat her in a fight and then you will come to a landscape with a save point. DO NOT USE THE SAVE POINT! Talk to Yuffie and refuse another fight. She asks if you are scared, so say you are petrified. She then decides to leave so tell her to wait and then ask her to join you, but don't ask her name. She will run after you and then you will be able to name her. If you do anything other than this, she will steal varying amounts of Gil and run away, so don't do it! * Finding Vincent - the Nibelheim safe If you read the letter to the left of the entrance at the Nibelheim mansion, you receive 3 clues as to how to find out the safe combination. The fourth clue is underneath in invisible ink. You can follow the clues to the back of the treasure chest upstairs on the left, the piano in the room under the stairs and the floor by the window on the right section, or you can just take it from me that the numbers are: 36 right 10 left 59 right 97 right This means you go to 36, press circle, go to 10, press circle etc. You must not go past the number or forget to press circle or the combination won't work. When it opens up, you will have to fight the Lost Number who is pretty tough unless you have a HP level of 1200HP or more and 2nd level magic. It is best to do this once you have the Tiny Bronco. * Lost Number There are two sides to this beast, the red side attacks physically and the purple side attacks with magic. Try to use 'all' spells a lot and summon materia as this will mean that both sides are killed off at the same time. If you kill one side, the other gains more power so you don't want that to happen. Second level spells are a must (third if possible) and good summon materia is needed to win. Use Big Guard Enemy Skill. When you kill the Lost Number, you will see the safe fly open. Get the Odin Materia and the key inside the safe. You will also have got the Cosmo Memory (Red XIII's L4 Limit break) when you beat the boss. * Finding Vincent - Basement key Go into the right room of the mansion and press circle by the brick wall to make it open. Follow the spiral staircase round and go through the purple room. If you happen to run into a two headed monster in the purple part and your HP levels are low, RUN as he will almost certainly kill you! When you get to the cellar where you met Sephiroth, you should notice another door which was previously locked. It is now open, so go inside and press circle by the coffin. Tell him about Sephiroth then talk until he tells you to leave him alone. Press circle again by the coffin, talk and name him. Then leave and he will catch you up by the stairs and you will get an option to reform your party. END OF FAQ PART ONE - PART TWO CONTAINS: 6) Ruby Weapon 7) Wutai secret area guide 8) Secret bits and goodies
