Missouri Firearm Permits

Missouri's firearm permit system is such (instant check) that the Brady provision (5 day wait) is not applicable. Gun permits are required to transfer (purchase, pawn, or give) any handgun between any persons. Gun permits may be obtained at the Sheriff's Dept. at 301 W. 2nd St. The applicant must apply in person. There is a $10.00 fee for each firearm transaction. Applicant must be 21 years old, live in Phelps County, and have a clean criminal record.

Applicant will need to bring the following information when applying for a permit: Picture identification card, Model and serial number of firearm, and the name and address of the person who is selling him/her the handgun. Upon completion of the computer check of the individual and the handgun, the applicant will receive two copies of the firearms permit and a reciept for the $10.00 fee.

The person who is selling the handgun must return one (white) copy of the permit back to the Sheriff's Dept. within 30 days or the permit will become invalid. Most permits are issued "while you wait." Occasionlly a longer wait may be required for the following reasons; Computer is down, a certified computer operator is not on duty, or insufficient manpower not allowing immediate computer access. You may call the office in advance to check on delays. 573-364-3860.
