David A. Coates
May 20, 1840 - March 1, 1892
David Coates was born May 20, 18401, the third child of Thomas P. Coates and
Julia Frances Higbee, Thomas's third wife. He was the 11th child of Thomas P. Coates.
He was educated at Mount Pleasant college.2 He married Sarah Frances Fitzpatrick
on March 20, 1872 at Elmwood, Saline county.3 They had 3 children, Leonora, born
in 1873 and died at age 16, Thomas, born in 1875 and died in 1932 while living at
the home of his younger sister Fannie4, who was born June 19, 1885.
In 1876-'77, Dave was a general laborer.5 In 1883 and 84 he was the Police Judge
for Moberly.7 In 1885 he was the city recorder and was residing on Thompson on
the west side, 5 doors south of Rollins.6
David had had a drinking problem and finally was divorced from his wife sometime
after 1885. He died suddenly while at work in Anthony's saloon on March 1, 1892.
He is buried in Oakland Cemetary.2
