The Mormon Faith & Black Folks
Question #58

Q. Can’t we just forget the past and move-on? Why can’t we just forget the Curse of Cain doctrine and the Priesthood ban and let the Church move forward and not look back?

A. Because the past can’t be forgotten! The Curse of Cain/Priesthood ban information and quotes are all over the Internet. Hundreds of millions of people can access that information with only a click. But the bigger question is ‘should we forget the past’? Should we forget the Curse of Cain and Priesthood ban? Should we forget that the Canaanites were the servants of servants of the Israelites? Should we forget that the Israelites were sometimes cursed as well as blessed? Should we forget the curses or God and remember only His blessings? If we forget His curses then we are truly only hearing one-side of His Message. The divine cursings of God are half of the Gospel; the God-Story. The curses of God were as important as His blessings. The curses of God were established to teach us something! The curses of God taught us that He will curse us when we disobey as well as bless us when we obey. And that is a lesson that should never be forgotten!

Tens of thousands of black folks are coming into the Church every year. If they don’t receive truthful answers regarding the Curse of Cain/Priesthood ban most of them will go permanently inactive. Is that the Church ‘moving forward’?

Hundreds of thousands of black folks are investigating the Church every year. Almost all of them will eventually have ‘Blacks and the Priesthood’ questions. What should we say? Should we simply ignore them? Should we say,. “That’s all in the past~let’s move on?” Should we lie and deny the Curse of Cain was ever taught~hoping they won’t check? Or should we simply tell them the Truth? It is this author’s opinion, and he has spoken with hundreds of blacks with such questions, that the Truth is always the best policy. Simply tell the Truth and let the Spirit work! Tell the Truth and let the cards fall where they may. The Truth always works better than a lie or an equivocation or dodge! The Spirit can only testify to the Truth. The Truth has divine power that a lie, a denial, an equivocation, or an excuse never has! The Truth is from God. Anything else is from another place. Jesus told His disciples:

“But let your communication be, Yea, yea: Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” (Matthews 5:37)

Tell everyone who inquires about the Curse of Cain or the Priesthood ban the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth; without excuse, denial, apology, or explain-away. The Spirit will testify only to the Truth, and the Pure-in-Heart, the Elect of God, will feel the testimony of the Holy Spirit.

When I have been asked about the Curse of Cain and the Priesthood ban, I say,

“Black folks of African ancestry are the descendants of the ancient Egyptians; a people who were blessed with wisdom but cursed as pertaining to the Priesthood. The ancient Egyptians were the descendants of Cain through Ham, the son of Noah. Cain was the firstborn of Adam, and had the birthright to the Priesthood. He and his descendants were to be the first to receive the Priesthood, but because he offered a sacrifice to the LORD in a state of unrighteousness his offering was rejected, and the birthright fell to Abel. But Cain slew Abel in an attempt to get his birthright back. Cain cut off the posterity of Abel. So the LORD decreed that Cain and his descendants would not hold the Priesthood before Abel and his descendants. In 1978 the Priesthood ban was removed after President Spencer W. Kimball supplicated the LORD to remove it. The LORD listened to his Prophet, and it was removed. Since that day, Members of black African descent have had all the rights and blessings of any other Member of the Church. The LORD blessed and cursed His own people Israel many times. The LORD curses us when we don’t obey Him, but when we do obey Him He blesses us. Black Members now have all the blessings any other Member has.”

I’ve had no problems with this explanation; even from people I’ve met who were very embittered and angry when they asked me about the Curse of Cain. I simply told them the Truth, and it seemed to have a calming effect upon them.

Always remember: the Spirit will testify only to the Truth! He won’t testify to lies, denials, equivocations, explain-away, excuses, reinterpretations, spins, or apologies. Remember also: the Church’s mission is to gather the Elect! You don’t need to placate or apologize to the World. You do not need to try shape the Gospel into what the World will be happy with. Lucifer is the “god of this World” (2 Corinthians 4:4). And the World is doomed. It will end, but the Kingdom of God will go on forever. You need only to tell the Truth and the Elect will believe it and accept it; because the Holy Spirit testifies to their spirit that it is true.
