MacNelly
Creator of the comic strip "Shoe" and a syndicated political cartoonist, MacNelly was honored for both achievements.
In 1972, 1978, and 1985, MacNelly was honored with journalisms highest compliment winning the Pulitzer. NCS (National Cartoonist Society) also honored him with their highest honor, the Reuben Award.
MacNelly attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. graduating from there in 1965. He also attended University of North Carolina almost graduating from there in 1969. While attending UNC, MacNelly began to work for The Daily Tar Heel.
MacNelly began drawing "Shoe" in 1977 for the Richmond News Leader. The strip soon became seen in more than 1,000 newspapers. The strip was named in honor of Jim Shumaker, for whom MacNelly worked for the Chapel Hill Weekly.
In 1982, MacNelly joined the Chicago tribune in which there after he continued to receive acclaim in his field of cartooning, winning his third Pulitzer and being judged "best in the business" by his fellow political cartoonists in 1987, 1989, and in 1993. In 1991, he won the Sigma Chi Delta Award for editorial cartooning.
On June 8, 2000, Jeff MacNelly regrettably past away at Johns Hopkins Hospital. We will all miss you Jeff.
His long time assistant Chris Cassett, along with his wife Susie MacNelly and close friend Gary Brookins continue his wonderful comic strip today.
