"A Calling"
Some of us have obeyed-
a silent, soul-touching call from a primeval past-
audible only in the ancient, challenging howl of a lonesome wolf from a high, dark and distant hill.

Those choosing to answer-
must know that to do so
may lead them to a lonely, sometimes perilous path-
and an odyssey from which they might not fully return.

For apart of themselves will be left-
out there-back along the trail-
payment for being witness to places, things, and deeds
of which, most of them will not speak-but hinted at perhaps,
in the gaze of their eyes-looking into that far distance
beyond the horizon; seeing that which is seen
only by others who have answered the call-
and who know by instinct that they too
will bear the brand of an unseen mark upon their souls.

And those who have not heard or answered the call-
can only wonder at the mysteries they must have seen-
and in their sleep-
of what they dream.

Written by Charles F. "The Hawk" Weyant--survivor of Battle of Xa Cam My April 11, 1966--from the book he wrote and sent to Joyce called "An Odyssey in Broken Rhythms and Ragged Lines".
