Sand Mandalas-Palace of the Deities

The sand mandala is a strictly symmetrical diagram with a focus towards the center. It is divided into four sections in which concentric circles and quarters are marked. The colorful complexity is created by means of fine, colored sand or even quartz, strewn on the basic structure with a help of mental tubes. It is a work that requires days to complete. This procedure demands a high level of skill, concentration and precision.

Mandalas are used to increase concentration and insight during meditation. They symbolize palaces, which serve as houses for the deities and show their hierarchy in which the deities take their definate place according to the function. In a broader sense the mandala refers to the entire cosmos. It represents the complete, harmoniously ordered and therefore peaceful universe. After completion it is offered in a special ritual.
