    Work Experience

2000-until now: Assistant Professor at the Geography Program, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, United Arab Emirates University

Activities in the UAE University can be categorized in 3 main areas: Academic, Community Services, and Research.
    1. Academic:
Teaching the following courses: Cartography, Computer Cartography, Current Environmental Issues, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), and Field Practicum.
Developing online material for the majority of the above courses and this will help in easy deployment of the courses in the BLACKBOARD environment. The material can accessed wherever and whenever at: http://faculty.uaeu.ac.ae/~myagoub

    2. Community Services:
    Inside the University:
Member in many committees at the department, college, and university level. Examples of these include:
    - IT Technical coordinator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (D.V.C. For Academic Affairs,17/2/2001).
    - Member in the Steering Committee of the University for Postgraduate Studies(Chancellor, ref. No. 864, 9/9/2002).
    - Member in the committee for academic programs at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (Division of Government, Policy, and Urban Studies) (Dean College of HS, 29/9/2003).
    - Head of the Executive Committee for establishing M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and GIS at the University(Dean of Graduate Studies: 18/3/2002 updated on 29/9/2003).
    - Director, M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and GIS (Vice Chancellor decree 815, 20/9/2004).
The M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and GIS is considered a new program for the University and it is the first in the region.
The program passed through various stages such as survey to the market for determination of the needs, survey to universities that have similar programs, specifying of suitable courses that meet the UAE market demand, determination of available and required resources (hardware, software, personnel), writing of the proposal, and sending of the proposal to three external reviewers (Prof. Michael F. Goodchild-USA,Prof. Nigel Waters-Canada,Professor Michael Batty-UK). All the reviwers had strongly recommended the implementation of the program. The program was approved by the University on 9/12/2003 in order to start at 2004/2005 academic year. I considered this program as my biggest contribution to the University and to the community as a whole.

    Outside the University:
    - GIS Training for Police Officers (Ministry of Interior) Using ArcView (3-6/2/2001).
-GIS Training for Mr Yonous Khamis Saeed A. Alla from Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) (10/3/2001- 9/04/2001).
-Catalyst in making a link between Zayed Institute for Research and Technology,University of London, and the United Arab Emirates University through organization of meetings between the world water expert, Prof. Tonny Allan, and the UAEU staff (17/9/2001).

    3. Research:
A complete list of research activities is shown in the Papers’ Section below.
Obtained a research grant from The Research Affairs at the UAE University under contract number 04-1-11/2.
Research Title: The Historical Development of Al Ain between 1970 and 2000 Through Integration of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.
    Research Grant: 24,000 Dhs
Research Output : a paper (see the Papers’ Section) and a multimedia CD (a snapshot of the CD is available online at: http://faculty.uaeu.ac.ae/~myagoub/main_Alain.htm

1999-2000 : Assistant Professor at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design, International Islamic University Malaysia

Teaching Surveying Engineering, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, GIS, and Geomorphology. Participating in the planning studio in Urban Design and Conservation, site analysis (inventory, bubble diagram), zoning regulations, preparation of zoning maps (Residential, commercial, Industrial, Public institutions).

1995-1998: Research Assistant at the Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Engineering, University Tecknologi Malaysia, Malaysia

Demonstration for students on the principles of GIS (data, hardware, software, and people), and the basic steps to solve day-to-day problems using GIS as a tool that have a high cost/benefit ratio.
Training on using FoxPro, dBASEIII, ARC/INFO (PC/Workstation), and ArcView.
The workflow for ARC/INFO covers data input (digitization, scanning, ADS, DXF, raster image), editing (ARCEDIT), topology building (CLEAN, BUILD, TRANSFORM), adding attribute data using (*.dbf, INFO, ORACLE), linking the attribute to the spatial data (JOINITEM, JOIN, RELATE), create 2.5D view (TIN), dropping background satellite images (REGISTER, RECTIFY, IMAGEGRID), doing spatial analysis (RESELECT, INTERSECT, BUFFER, etc.), view coverages under ArcView (Shape files), customization (AML, AVENUE), and production of final maps using ARCPLOT and LAYOUT.

Participated in creating a user-interface for water quality at Klang Valley in Malaysia using AVENUE (ArcView) and for groundwater monitoring. Participated also in preparation of a user-interface for dumping site selection using Visual Basic and AVENUE.

1992-1995: Research Assistant at the Department of Surveying, Faculty of Engineering ,Tongji University, Shanghai, China

Participated in the production of old-style and squatter houses maps in Shanghai through integration of remote sensing and GIS. This included identification/classification of squatter settlements on color infrared photos, transfer of the classified results to topographic map, digitization of the maps, and conversion to ARC/INFO format.
The study also investigated the possibility of automatic classification using IDRISI software.

During 1993: worked as part-time English instructor at the Informatics College in Shanghai(Head Quarters in Singapore)
Taught English to the Informatics College students, including listening, oral, and presentation skills.

1990-1991: Teaching Assistant at the Department of Surveying, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, University of Khartoum

Demonstration for undergraduate students on using level, theodolite, and preparation of plans using surveying methods. The position includes instruction for other subjects, such as remote sensing, photogrammetry, and GPS.
Participated in the preparation of contour maps for the French Geological Dep. (BRGM) in Eastern Sudan for gold exploration, as a joint research between the University and BRGM.
