Carrera RS & RSR 3.8L

Back in 1993, for people which felt the desire to race with a 911 equiped with an atmospheric engine, Porsche developped the RSR 3.8L. But to homologuate the car in GT category, it has to be derivated from a production model. That's why Porsche commercialized a special serie itself based on the 964 Carrera RS : the Carrera RS 3.8L

The Carrera RS 3.8 is derivated from the RS 3.6 but in fact, a lot of things differenciate those sisters. If they are showing the same philosophy ( reinforced and lightened body combined with more power ), the cars are far away one from the other because the Carrera RS 3.8 receives a new 3.8L engine and it retakes the wide body of turbocharged models. The front spoiler is also new and the beautiful rear spoiler is the fine one of the Turbo Leichtbau, more efficient than the retractable one.
Like on the Carrera RS 3.6, lightening have been really pushed on : no rear seats or electric commands anymore ( to open the windows or to close the car, no alarm, no radio set...) and two non-adjustable bucket seats. Of course, external door panels, front wings and front cover are made of aluminium while finer toughened glasses is utilised for all windows and for the windshield.

The engine is nowadays well known ( it is even an option now ! ) but in 1993, it was totaly new and offered a big increasement of power and also of throughput : the Flat-6 get up to 300hp and achieved 80hp/L compared to the 72 of the Carrera RS 3.6. The bigger capacity was obtained by using a 102mm bore ( 100mm before ) that gives exactly 3.746 cm3. In prevision of a racing model, the admission system have been totally revised. It now includes a delivery-meter of the air weight by a warming wire and a pipe with individual admission throttle valve for each cylinder. Like on the Carrera RS 3.6 but contrary to 964 engines, the engine flywheel is monopart and lightened while the oil radiator is more effective.

The transmission isn't far away from production models and features a limited slip differential with 40% locking factor. The clerance of the gearshift have been shortened and the assistance direction disappeared like on the previous model.
Of course, suspension have been upgraded with Bilstein dampers, harder springs and stabilizer bars. The brakes are those of the Turbo Leichtbau ( 322mm front and 299mm rear ) and the ABS has been kept. The rims are quite enormous : 9J18 & 11J18. They are fitted with 235/40 and 285/35 tyres on front and rear respectively.
With full oil and fuel, the car weights only 1,210 kg. That's a really great score indeed.
It was sold 220.000 DM, all taxes included when commercialized in Germany.

Now let's see the racing model ( all the photos ).Both models are based on the Carrera RS 3.8 and the racing models were proposed as Kit A & Kit B by the factory.
The first one made the car authorized for road using. In fact, it was ideal for circuit races. For 10,000 DM more, the car received a security cage, a racing harness, a fire extinguisher for cockpit equipment and competition brakes settings. A special lightened clutch plate was propounded as an option.
The Kit B converts the Carrera RS in Carrera RSR, forbidden on road and exclusively set for GT races. The car receives a competition engine delivering 325hp ( limit in german championship ) and even 350hp in maximum evolution. A competition clutch and a second oil radiator are used. The body interior is depleted of any furniture or sound proofing material. It features a complete anti-fire installation. All the suspensions is mounted on Unibal spherical joints and the FT3 fuel tank was conformable at FISA statements.
