Gibson Nighthawk neck/body

The story behind this 1993 Gibson Nighthawk is that the original owner purchased it at full retail and shortly thereafter, discovered that an approximate one inch piece of wood at the headstock joint was pulling away from the rest of the neck. It was professionally repaired and repainted, only to reappear. Disappointed, he stripped the hardware and Electronics and traded the body/neck to a friend of mine for a Telecaster. Reportedly, the crack did not affect the playing of the instrument and while it is unsightly, had been stable. A couple of guitar techs have told me to shoot some super-glue in the crack and just ignore it. Aside from some dings and scratches simply from being moved around a bit without a case, the guitar looks essentially unused. There is no visible fret wear. With such a beautiful book matched top, its a tempting project, but just one of those things I haven't gotten to yet.

ALLPARTS body/85 Kramer Neck Strat

Another one of those "I'll get around to finishing this someday" guitars is this Strat. An allparts sunburst body (with plenty of dings, scratches, and a couple of gouges) is combined with a mid-'80s Kramer "hockey-stick" neck. Prior to purchase, the frets were leveled and re-crowned. A matched set of Jackson pickups fills out the pickguard, although the humbucker will need some longer mounting screws. With a little wiring and a bridge, this should make a fun player.

Discovery ES 335 copy

This otherwise nicely constructed ES-335 copy suffers from the same neck ailment as the Gibson Nighthawk above. (What did I do to end up with two of them!) It came to me stripped and is being rebuilt with all black hardware, knobs and pickups. (Notice both the neck pickup and the tuners have been painted metallic gray-black using auto touch-up paint!) The Guitar is all mahogany, with a bound neck and body, solid mahogany block inside the center and a bookmatched top. Really pretty. I've owned an Epiphone reissue and the real thing, and honestly like this one better than either. While the Gibson had arguably better quality materials, the neck on this one feels more comfortable. Since owning it, the guitar has been strung up to pitch and with the truss rod cranked, the action felt ok. As for the wood coming away from the back of the neck, if I keep this one, I'll probably just have it repaired.
