Spiff's Favorite Movies

Here They Are:

  • The nominations are out. What a ripoff. What a freakin' ripoff. I'm gonna list the nominations, then my picks. Have a funky day.

  • BEST PICTURE:

Elizabeth, Life is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan, Shakespeare in Love, The Thin Red Line

Personally, I hated all of these movies, except Life is Beautiful, which I haven't seen. I am not even going to take a guess here.

  • BEST DIRECTOR

Roberto Benigni, Terence Malick, John Madden (the football player?) Steven Spielberg, Peter Weir

Please win it Peter, Please win it Peter...

  • BEST ACTOR Roberto Benigni, Tom Hanks, Ian McKellan, Nick Nolte, Ed Norton

The fantabulous Jim Carrey, Denzel Washington and Johnny Depp were all shot out. Nick Nolte was good in Affliction, but Ed Norton gave a terrifying performance as a nazi in American History X, so I'm going for him here, because he should have won it in '96 for Primal Fear. Come on Ed!

  • BEST ACTRESS Cate Blanchett, Fernanda Montenegro, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, Emily Watson

WHAT'S WITH THIS CRAP?????!!!! Of all the performances, I've only seen two, and only Paltrow really deserved a nomination. Holly Hunter gave the most funkadelic performance of the whole year in Living Out Loud, and she should have been nominated, as should Angela Bassett. (Okay, they were chick flicks. Big dang deal.)

  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR James Coburn, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Geoffrey Rush, Billy Bob Thornton
  • Everyone's a former winner except Jimmy and Ed, and can you really see Jimmy winning if Nick doesn't? So I'm gonna go with the deserving Ed Harris.
  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Kathy Bates, Brenda Blethyn, Judi Dench, Rachel Griffiths, Lynn Redgrave.

In the name of Isaac Hayes and all that is good and decent, do they TRY to pick crappy, unknown performances? BRENDA BLETHYN?! What is up with this? Queen Latifah would probably have been nominated for Living Out Loud if she hadn't been a singer (the same thing happened to Madonna in '96.) I have to go with Kathy Bates, because it's the only performance I've both seen and liked this year.
