How To Page

This is sort of an instruction sheet to get the emulator, the games, and to get them all running.

I am going to do this step by step,, trying to not forget a single step,,, it is easier for me to write like this,, so I won't miss anything... if I am missing something,, let me know. It may be easiest to print this out,, so you aren't switching back and forth constantly.

First thing you need is to make a commodore 64 folder. It makes it much easier to keep track of the games you download and unzip. Just go to your window explorer, and add a new folder to your C drive. It makes it easier if you rename it,, (right click on the new folder, and there towards the bottom of the list you will get is RENAME).

The next thing you need is an emulator,, it is a program that turns commodore language into windows language. My favorite so far is the Vice. I have put a link to it below.

Unzip the vice into your new folder that you have just made. Don't worry about running it yet,, you need games to get results. LOLOL

GAMES. Ok, I have a couple of links below for the games,,they also have other emulators, news, and all sorts of other things concerning the commodore. but right now ,, we want the games. LOL let's use Lode runner for instance.

Go to the Lemon64 link I have below. Her page will come up. On the left side are her links,, including her game link,, it is like the second one down. Go to games.

She has all her games listed under the letter the game starts with. She has ALOT of games! Find the "L" and click. Scroll thru till you find Lode Runner. Just click on the name ,, and you will be downloading it.

Ok, now unzip it your new folder. You might want to download a few games to give you the feel of the emulator. Your winzip gives you the option of what file you want this to be sent to,,,just click browse, and find the folder, click open,, it will send it right there for you with no problems.

Now comes the fun part. You got the emulator,, you got the game.. now to play.

You need to open your windows explorer folder again. Go to your new folder and open it. There you will find 6 folders with names like 64, PET, Drives, etc.... don't worry about those. what we are looking for isn't in one of those. After the folders you will see your new game, plus the commorde symbol,, that strange looking C,with an x128,,, or a x64,, plus some others. We want the C64 one.

first off let's get it on your desktop so you don;t have to go digging thru your windows explorer every time you want to play. right click on the C64 symbol. One of your options will be 'create shortcut' .. click on that. then LEFT click on your new shortcut, and HOLDING THE BUTTON DOWN THE WHOLE TIME,,, drag the ghost image of the short cut to the side off the windows explorer window,,, till you are over your main screen,(your desk top). NOW let go of the button.

WHEW! you with me so far?? (this is alot of typing!LOL) ALRIGHT. let's close the windows explorer, and everything else. You don't need them anymore,, not unless you want to download more games later.

Now click on the new C64 shortcut you just dropped on your desk. The emulator should just boot right up for you. At the top of the emulator you have your boxes with different names...File, Snapshot, options, settings, and help.

Ok,, lets go to file first. click that open. at the very top,,is Auto start disk/tape image. That's the one you want. click it.

It should take you right to where you have your games and the emulator are in your new folder... if it is not at the folder where you have your games and emulator are at,,, it is easy enough to find..... just click on the window where it shows you where you are at... you will see C. click on that,, and scroll down till you find your new folder,, click on that,,, it will open for you,,, and it should show you all your games and stuff for you that you have put in the folder. make sure that the box that shows what types of files it will show is on *all files*.

hey we're almost there to the good stuff,,, just a few more things to do... ok? Just stick with me.

Now click on the game you want. and then hit open.

You got it,,, but we have to adjust it so that you can play with the keyboard. That takes us back up to the top of the vice window.

Go to settings. scroll down till you get to joystick settings.. click it.

It will say Joystick in port #1... lets start with that one. we need to change that. open the box,, and you will see none, numpad+cntrl-r, keyset A,keyset B, joystick #1, and finally,, joystick #2.

You want keyset A. so click that.

now you click on the "config keyset A" buton. just set the buttons how you are most comfortable with them. click "ok"

ok,, I have already found out that sometime the games still want to look for that joystick,,, so,,,go to options at the top of the vice window,, click that.scroll down till you find "swap joystick". click it.

Now lode-runner should work great for you!!

Most of the games are pretty easy to get going. You may have to play with the joystick settings and the swap joystick to make it so YOU are in control,,, but all of that is easy enough.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!

I have found out several things about the C64 games so far. You will need to download a blank disk to save games... a disk in your computor doesn't work. Just download it straight to your new folder where you have your other commodore stuff. You can find the blank disk HERE.

If the game ever asks you if you are playing a 1541 (or in some form of that), the answer is NO. Games like moonmist won;t load if you answer yes.

I have repeated this same warning on the Main C64 page,,, not by accident,, but because I figure not everyone will come to this side page.
