THE 1ST HOUSE

The cusp of the 1st house is the Ascendant or Rising Sign (the sign that was on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth). It describes the outer persona and physical attributes. It mirrors the whole personality, the natural disposition and tendencies, individuality and the way the Self is expressed. It shows how people see the individual and the way the individual wants others to see them.
TAURUS (Fixed Earth) ruling the 1st
THE 2ND HOUSE
The 2nd house describes material assets, how monetary income is handled, and the potential ways it may be earned. It indicates inner talents and resources, the need for fulfillment, emotional feelings, the sense of self-worth as well as the sense of values.
GEMINI (Mutable Air) ruling the 2nd
People with Gemini, ruled by Mercury, on the 2nd house cusp can be skillful manipulators of money or finance, especially adept at arbitration and making deals with others. Innate abilities to be developed include inventiveness, dexterity, flexibility and a talent for using words. There may be more than one source of income or way of earning money, and using cleverness and ingenuity are marketable assets.
THE 3RD HOUSE
The 3rd house describes the mental state, intellectual orientation, self-expression and all forms of communication - speaking, writing and singing. It indicates early education, siblings, and mechanical dexterity and skills. It indicates physical actions, and all means of transportation including short trips.
CANCER (Cardinal Water) ruling the 3rd
People who have Cancer, ruled by the Moon, on the 3rd house cusp, are shaped by their surroundings and reflect what they feel. Since there is an ability to feel what others are thinking, they may have difficulty in distinguishing between their own thoughts and the ruminations of others around them. At times, they may believe that they are being objective and rational when in fact they are reacting on the basis of some emotional complex. Situations will be colored according to their moods and sensitivities. Comfort and security is sought through a sibling or a relative. The relationship with the actual mother may be more like an older sister than a parent.
THE 4TH HOUSE
The 4th house describes the residence, domestic environment, family origins and the home that will be established. This house shows property and all that is secluded. It indicates the influence of the parent who had the greater influence in childhood. It also indicates the beginning as well as the end of various cycles in life.
LEO (Fixed Fire) ruling the 4th
Those with Leo, ruled by the Sun, on the 4th house cusp, need to delve deep inside to find themselves. What is achieved in the outer world is perhaps less important than what is accomplished in terms of soul growth and inner spiritual development. The struggle to define the self rages on the home front. There is a strong need to own their own homes where they can exercise authority and influence. Sometimes there is a prolonged search for the right place to root. Those with Leo ruling this house need to distinguish their own individual identity as distinct from the family background without denying that they are also part of the family. The task at hand is combining the two - acknowledging their family of origin and yet at the same time, developing an identity in their own right.
Since the 4th house represents the mother, then Leo on this house cusp makes her very important. The child could project their own identity and power onto the mother, her needs and wants become the child's needs and wants. Usually, there is a collusion here, the child worships and adores the mother and offers the self up to her. At some point, those with Leo ruling the 4th house must examine how much they are doing something for themselves, and how much is being done to win their mother's love.
THE 5TH HOUSE
The 5th house describes creative talent and imaginative powers, the capacity for enjoyment and the pursuit of pleasure, romance, children and speculative ventures. It includes emotional attitudes and the love given out. It also indicates dramatic, literary or artistic ability.
VIRGO (Mutable Earth) ruling the 5th
For people with Virgo, ruled by Mercury, on the 5th house cusp, practical creative pursuits, hobbies and recreational outlets are the means through which they become conscious of the self and the environment. Some form of artistic expression may be the medium through which these people see, think, feel, and communicate. Expanding the mind through knowledge and enveloping the ability to communicate and convey ideas contribute to greater self-fulfillment with Virgo ruling this house. Mercury's restlessness and need for variety can manifest itself in an active romantic life but the discerning mind-set of Virgo will pursue quality over quantity. The flame of romance is probably kept burning longer if the other person is mentally stimulating.
THE TRANSCENDENTALS
The sign positions of the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, remain the same for all people over a long duration of time and effect entire generations. Therefore, the more personal influences of these planets are shown by the houses in which they are placed.
PLUTO in the 5th house

As children, people with Pluto in the 5th felt that they were more likely to be protected by their parents if they were found to be enchanting or captivating. Therefore being somebody special is linked in their minds with warding off doom and disaster. For those with Pluto in this house, the need for love, approval and power may still be mixed up with the survival instinct. However, failing to win the recognition they seek may provide the impetus for further self evalution and self knowledge.
With Pluto in the 5th (the house of romance), romantic pursuits may become entangled with the power drive and some degree of sexual compulsiveness. Those with this placement may fear the intensity of their sexual drive and try to inihibit it altogether or find ways to transmute libidinal expression into channels which they deem more acceptable, for example, sports and other outdoor activities. Others may derive a sense of potency through sexual conquest and attract love affairs which involve power conflicts, drama and intrigue. Carried to extremes, they could use other people too much to prove their own worth. True mutuality, sharing and respect for another person's integrity are the lessons to be learned if Pluto is in the 5th.
People with Pluto trine the Ascendant may outwardly appear forceful, self-assertive and independent, although inwardly they not be feeling any of these things. Because they rarely show their real selves, others may regard them as more open and friendly than they really are and they often attract individuals who look for some advantage from them.
With Pluto trining the Ascendant, there is a hold on people that is firmer than they imagine. Others frequently pour out their troubles, ask advice, or seek protection. They are not adverse to delving into relationships as long as they themselves are out of range and untouchable. This stops them from making ordinary, simple emotional contacts with peers. First they invite everybody to put them on a pedestal, second they do not wish to be known intimately, and third they make big emotional demands on those allowed to come near. Sooner or later, they are brought face to face with these problems. Once they see where they have been going wrong, they are quite capable of making radical improvements.
URANUS in the 5th house
Those with Uranus in the 5th should let their individuality shine through whatever they do. Uranus in this house may never be totally satisfied with what is created, they are always thinking it could have been better or more ideal. Sometimes creative inspiration comes in a flash, like a bolt of lightning charging the body.
Uranus is more interested in what others find weird and eccentric and may pursue hobbies which are out of the ordinary. The same goes for love affairs and romances - which may be unconventional, with sudden beginnings and endings. Uranus becomes bored when the initial excitement and enthusiasm wanes, or if the affair becomes too known or constricting. At that point, justifications are sought for an abrupt finish.
People who have Uranus trine the MC or Midheaven are highly individualistic and are always ready to fit the new into the old. They are prompt to take part in changes, often initiating them and keeping alert to what is going on instead of settling down to the day's work. They like novelty, especially in social and business affairs (a dull office routine would drive them to distraction). Alternative viewpoints are quite acceptable and they try to break down rigid forms and barriers in themselves and society.
Upheaval is not unknown, often they bring it on themselves. There is nothing mysterious about life suddenly propelling them in a new direction, but inner transformation may be the real cause.
MOON in the 5th house
- the house where the Moon resides shows where one is subject to emotional ups and downs.
People with the Moon in the 5th feel most at home when being creative, their artistic expression being innate and natural. Very often, they have a great appeal to the public in general. Their way of presenting themselves is pleasing, engaging and usually non-threatening, as if there is something vaguely familiar about them.
With the Moon in this house, hobbies, romance and creative endeavors are pursued in the individual's search for comfort, security and relaxation. Their romantic attractions and pleasures will be heavily influenced by the imagination and emotional needs. Affections may be changeable because of emotional ups and downs. There can also be a strong dependency on the romantic partner. The Moon in any house evokes old memories and associations. Similarly, issues around the mother could be re-lived through romantic entanglements.
THE 6TH HOUSE
The 6th house describes issues relating to work and employment. It suggests the tasks that one potentially does best. The influence of this house describes the way in which work is approached. The nature of relationships with co-workers is also revealed as is one's health, daily habits and their responsibilities.
LIBRA (Cardinal Air) ruling the 6th
With Libra, ruled by Venus, on the 6th house cusp, there is an effort to seek harmony and cooperation with co-workers and this enhances an innate ability to succeed financially. They function best when others respect their habit patterns. They enjoy artistic work and often do business with or for women. They are always ready to lend a helping hand and are usually blessed with good health. They are conscious of clothes and diet.
THE 7TH HOUSE
The 7th house relates to marriage and partnership or joint ventures of any kind. It describes interaction with other people and how one is regarded by others. This house is associated with legal matters, negotiations, contracts and all open confrontations, pleasant as well as adversarial. It indicates what is most lacking in oneself, since it is the opposite of the 1st house which shows one's strongest personality traits.
SCORPIO (Fixed Water) ruling the 7th
For people who have Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, on the 7th house cusp, it is wise to understand relationships and partnerships as catalysts or agents for personal transformation, growth and change. Through issues connected to partnership, parts of the nature which have been buried, repressed or kept under control by the ego will erupt messily into everyday life. After the blast, there is the task of putting themselves back together again, hopefully, with greater awareness and understanding of their own complexities. If they are not wholly in touch with their own darker or undifferentiated sides, then they may project these qualitites onto the partner and if they want to end a relationship but are afraid to do it for various reasons, they somehow provoke the other person to do it for them.
NEPTUNE in the 7th house
- the house where Neptune resides is where one tends to deceive oneself and others, it is also where one seeks the ideal.
Those with Neptune in the 7th often have a very romantic and idealized notion of what a relationship should be, which doesn't account for the hard work involved. Some will be looking for a god or goddess to worship, to revere and to save them. To assuage feelings of loneliness and isolation they often yearn to be absorbed into another person and rather than taking responsiblity to become a complete person in their own right, a partner may be sought to make them more whole. Eventually, they are faced with having to develop for themselves what they sought in the other person, and learn a more selfless kind of love in the bargain. Wherever Neptune is placed in the chart, a lot is asked of us.
They may also yearn for perfection in the partner or in the partnership itself, however, unconsciously, they can be extremely critical and judging of flaws in the other person that don't match up to their notion of love. Some present the facade of a perfect relationship to the public, when in actual fact it is very far from the ideal. Most positively, there may be a spiritual meeting and union of two people and an uncanny psychic rapport between them.
JUPITER in the 7th house
- the house where Jupiter resides shows where one often experiences good fortune.
With Jupiter in the 7th, one partner in personal relationships gets to be faithful and obedient while the other justifies running free-range. Sometimes the roles are reversed overnight. Jupiter in the 7th suffers from a classic freedom-closeness dilemma. They want their independence to explore different facets of life, yet they want their security as well. Those with Jupiter in this house do best with partners who share and understand their urge to have other interests outside the relationship.
Jupiter in the 7th can manifest in other ways. People with this jovial planet in the 7th house may resort to all sorts of tricks or disguises to capture the partner of their choice. They may also project Jupiter onto a partner and look for somebody to play "God" or be a father figure to them. In this sense, they are prey to anyone who promises them the world, and are liable to disappointment when they only get an ordinary relationship. The partner can reflect Jupiter in other respects - they may be foreign, prestigious and influential, religious or philosophical, spendthrift, or a lovable rascal who perpetually says one thing and does another. Most positively, the partner can bring warmth, generosity, good faith, material wealth, optimism and an expansion of awareness into the life of those with this placement. Conversely, the individual with Jupiter in the 7th can offer these same qualities in return and more often than not the relationship is beneficial to both partners.
When Jupiter conjuncts Neptune, there is a need for expansion and for widening horizons combined with a need to refine and disassociate things. It produces a state of affairs that is rather hard to define and this combination could lead to dreamy and impractical idealism.
Jupiter gives a natural love of spiritual things and the conjunction with Neptune intensifies devotional feelings. Ideals are fostered by these feelings and especially by the need for the sense of oneness given by Neptune. Not only are there social sympathies, but also a need for social action. Idealism is great and deeply rooted, which is why they can serve others for a long time or can devote themselves to artistic or spiritual activities. In other areas, where there is no sense of underlying unity, they may find it hard to summon up much enthusiasm, preferring to spend their time dreaming of better things.
Neptune and Pluto can only be interpreted in a collective, non-personal manner since this aspect lasts for many years. Neptune loves to dream, to idealize, to spin threads of gold through anything in order to make it beautiful and resplendent. Pluto prefers to stir the deepest and darkest niches and cloud the water, or uncover secrets. At its best, this combination can tap into the subconscious mind and give the ability to transform daily humdrum life into a golden age.
People with Neptune opposite the Ascendant can be particularly insecure. There is a great sensitivity to the environment but they are almost completely at a loss as to what to make of it. Others have no idea what is going on inside them either, all they know is that they are continually reacting to them.
Because of the combination of uncertainty and impressionability, their attitiude is evasive, they do not tackle problems straightforwardly, and tend to sidestep anyone seeking reproachment. Sometimes fantasy or false impressions lead them to react badly in an indirect way. They are quickly moved, even to tears, although they do not always show it. All reactions are expressions of sensitivity and vulnerability.
Flight into a private fantasy world is possible, but because the opposition is a hard and energetic aspect, creative abilities can be wonderfully stimulated if artistic or mystical talents are pursued.
MARS in the 7th house
- the house where Mars resides shows where one expends the greatest energy.
With Mars in the 7th, there is a strong urge to define the identity and gain a sense of power through relationships with other people. Quite often, they believe that through marriage or a partnership, they will find themselves in their own right. Some people with this placement come on so strongly at first that they frighten others away. Conversely, there may be an attraction to someone with obvious Mars qualities - the bold, straightforward, dynamic hero or heroine who can relieve them of the burden of making their own decisions in life. After a while, they may become angry or resentful at the bossiness of the other person and attempt to take back the power they so freely handed over. Or another way Mars in this house might manifest itself, is that the relationship is lively and stimulating where the partners positively spark off one another, while still allowing the mate to maintain personal freedom.
Those with Mars in the 7th also appear to need fairly constant reassurance of their worth in the eyes of other people. They are also likely to be the first to stand up and defend another person if they believe that they are being unjustly accused.
For people who have Mars sextile Uranus, two stimulating planets, there is restlessness, impatience, overactivity and self will. There is a need to live their own lives, to be interested in new things, and above all, to look for excitement. They are quick to seize fresh opportunities and expect others to do the same. On the other hand they may lack patience and have only a limited capacity for cooperation, but when they have to make a solo effort they can do outstandingly well because it fits in better with a deep rooted love of liberty. The changeability and fickleness of Uranus makes it hard to remain long at the same task, they need varied activities, not to mention a certain amount of challenge and adventure. However, they usually know how to create or find situations to obtain what they seek. Provided life is full of action and variety, and provided there is opportunity to show what they can do, they can be extremely creative and innovative.
People who have Mars sextile the MC are not averse to hard work, they are active and enterprising when it comes to carving out a place for themselves in society. Others see them as industrious and this can be an advantage where first impressions are vital. There is a good degree of self assertion and independence which others can find stimulating. They make good self starters provided they can follow their own bent.
THE 8TH HOUSE
The 8th house is related to taxes, debt, death, legacies, hidden assets and the income received through marriage or business partners. It describes sexuality and the support received from other people. It also indicates one's resourcefulness, and the ability to develop and use material assets as well as personal skills and abilities.
SAGITTARIUS (Mutable Fire) ruling the 8th
With Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, on the 8th house cusp, sexual intimacy can be understood symbolically as two people merging in to become something greater than what each one is individually. Conversely, people with Sagittarius ruling this house may have trouble reconciling philosophical and religious beliefs with the sexual drive. There may also be such high expectations of what sex should be and they look for meaning in what is hidden, taboo or mysterious. They will push open a door that others prefer to leave shut just in case the answer to life lies behind it.
VENUS in the 8th house
- the house where Venus resides shows what one really enjoys.
Venus in the 8th cares about what happens between people, and wants to ensure that anything which is shared or exchanged is beautiful, appropriate, beneficial and valuable. It favors business partnerships and the accruing of money and possessions through marriage or inheritance.
In the bedroom, Aphrodite's magic girdle transforms into a provocative corselet. Her seductive charms find no better mode of expression than in the intimate whispers and caresses of love. There is a love for that which is mysterious or esoteric and a desire to probe for anything hidden or subtle as if what is found on that level will make them more complete. Bisexuality is possible. Venus in the 8th has a way of receiving and responding to others which relaxes them, making partners feel secure enough to loosen inhibitions and restraints. In this sense, those with Venus in Scorpio's natural house, whether innocently or not, entice others to give to them.
The need for warmth and love, for security and harmony is a weak and sensitive spot for people with Venus trine Saturn. They find it hard to let their vulnerability show and often erect a wall around their emotions. They give the impression of being resolute, reliable, and thorough, and as people who are not easily swayed by emotion. However, internally, emotions do play a substantial part in their lives. They might be inclined to push their emotions to one side or may try to get rid of them altogether even though they are still active in the unconscious. A safety valve is extremely important.
Generally, there is a need to play safe in emotional contacts. They look for older or more mature people with whom to form liaisons, but they must resist the temptation to look for a fatherly or motherly partner, as they would not be close enough to be a true companion. They take relationships as seriously as they take everything else and are more inclined to form a single deep friendship than many passing acquaintances.
With Venus trine Saturn, there is a potential to build up a lasting stable relationship, but before they give themselves to another, they must completely trust that other person because Saturn only bets on certainties. Learning self confidence and self acceptance is a must if they are to settle down. Once they can bring themselves to reveal their vulnerable and weak side, then they can enjoy a strong, enduring relationship.
There is an inherent strain and unrest compounded by Uranus that really tests the resilience of close relationships with others. Uranus is the individualist, the nonconformist. People with this aspect cannot stand boredom and complacency. They are experimental in love and unconventional in sexual desire. Bisexuality is possible. They are not bound by typical standards or principles. They attain great pleasure from breaking society's rules and are not much concerned with other people's opinions in these matters. They may be attracted to individuals who are married, culturally different, or much older or younger.
People with Venus square Uranus are talented in the arts. They are inventive and may create work which is innovative and ahead of the times. They are electric, charming and flirtatious. The creative side of this aspect can be expressed through a stimulating relationship with kindred spirits who are just as determined to preserve their own freedom as people with Venus square Uranus are to preserve theirs.
THE 9TH HOUSE
The 9th house describes higher education, advanced training, publishing, politics, foreign travel and studies, religious and philosophical views and cultural pursuits. It relates to court decisions, a second marriage, and in-laws. It indicates the lessons one learns through living.
CAPRICORN (Cardinal Earth) ruling the 9th
With Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, on the 9th house cusp, there is a serious, methodical, conservative and apprehensive view in the sphere of religion, philosophy, higher education and travel. Usually they have a need to find definite answers to basic questions concerning the meaning and patterning of existence. Often they have been brought up under the yoke of conventional or orthodox forms of religion. Their philosophy is practial, utilitarian and somewhat inhibitive. They believe only in that which can be seen, tested and proven. They may be frightened of their own potential and afraid of taking risks, and yet slowly and with persistance, they can sort through the doubts and hesitations and arrive there in the end.
THE 10TH HOUSE
The 10th house describes the career, ambition, public reputation, one's ego, status, fame, superiors and those in authority. It also relates to the parent who is the wage earner or authoritarian figure and their influence on one's life.
AQUARIUS (Fixed Air) ruling the 10th
With Aquarius, ruled by Uranus, on the 10th house cusp, there is a need to contribute something original and progressive to society. They don't want to be seen as ordinary, but rather as a force for change or innovation. Because the 10th is Capricorn's natural domain, there is the ability to channel their new ideas or insights through concrete vehicles. There is a need that the chosen career will benefit as many people as possible, which allows scope for the inventive and idealistic side of the person's nature to come to the fore.
SUN in the 10th house
- the house where the Sun resides is the life and heart of the horoscope; this is where one wants to shine.
With the Sun in the 10th, the identity is bound up with career and professional achievements. The 10th house describes the qualities in ourselves which we wish others to notice. There is a deep urge to be admired as a "somebody". Some degree of ambition should be owned and satisfied if they are to fulfill their life purpose and because of this, there are inherent conflicts between the home and personal life versus public and professional achievements. The kind of self exertion, dedication and perseverance required to ascend the ladder of success often limits the freedom and spontaneity to move in other directions.
Since the 10th house represents the father, energies here may be experienced through the father or projected onto him. Those with the Sun in this house might have experienced the father as powerful and authoritative and they may have to do battle with the father to sever the hold he has on them. In other cases, the father may have been physically or psychologically absent. The experience of an absent father could entail a lifetime search for the lost father. People with Sun in the 10th would ultimately need to find those "father" qualities inside themselves.
For people who have Sun trine the Moon, behavior (the Sun) easily fits in with the way they seek safety and certainty (the Moon) and this makes for inner tranquility. Creative power and formative ability go hand and hand and gives great ingenuity. The consonance between the Sun and Moon produces creative thinking which can be brought to bear on difficult circumstances and problems are tackled with a bold determination to resolve them. Very little tension arises with this aspect so a great deal of energy is available for other things.
However, nice as it is to feel quickly at home wherever they are, there is a danger of becoming lazy and inattentive, and blind to the real extent of problems. For example, a partnership or relationship that is starting to fall apart is not seen as much cause for concern and problems may be allowed to grow instead of being nipped in the bud.
People who have Sun square the Ascendant, make a direct impact on those around them, and they have a desire to manifest in their environment but the trouble is that they are very uncertain how to do so. Therefore external behavior is erratic, one minute they sound brimming with confidence but at the next they clam up as if they were unsure of themselves. This makes them hard to understand and complicates relationships with people. They shrink from criticism since it feeds insecurity. Sometimes they withdraw into a shell or hide behind others. The ego is out of step with expectations and these people have difficulty in seeing how they ought to be. The world does not always respond to them as they think it should, at least, not until they learn to adjust.
MERCURY in the 10th house
- the house where Mercury resides shows where and how one communicates best.
The qualities and principles associated with Mercury are usually reflected in the choice of career when it is in the 10th house. The work may involve writing, teaching, the media, and telecommunications. While pursuing career and professional ambitions, they can learn about themselves and the environment. Those with this placement like to be seen as bright, intelligent and capable and will want to be remembered by others for these qualities.
Mercury sextile Mars indicates an alert and acute mind and may make for a fluent communicator. Conversation is brisk, lively, and energetic and the native is quick on the uptake. They have excellent powers of observation and mental activity is great. They easily see connections and snatch at all kinds of ideas from the outside. Constant alertness enables this person to pick up information readily, but thoughts give them little rest.
Being free to express opinions is something that is considered important. This person has independent views on everything. Although Mars does not encourage mature reflection, this is offset by the speed with which relationships can be seen and facts can be absorbed. Even when young, this person displayed the need to be independent in thought and deed, however, the openness of Mars and Mercury aspects gives the grace to admit when they are wrong.
Mercury is the planet of manual dexterity and when it is sextile Mars, the owner is very skilled with the hands.
When Mercury is square Saturn, these two planets give a fairly gloomy cast to the mind. When people with this aspect start considering or analyzing anything (Mercury), they come into conflict with the need to quality, limit and define (Saturn). Anxiety, caution, careful verification and even timidity are bound to play a part in ordinary contacts and also in their thinking. One thing is certain - they are never going to rush things. They are serious, prudent, calm and collected, and will often reflect on what others say - not to be guided by it, but in order to work out what lies behind it. They want to know every detail so that they do not have to reveal how uncertain they are over relationships and contacts.
Although these two planets are at cross purposes here, the confrontations they cause can be instructive. They can develop many valuable characteristics associated with the combination of Mercury and Saturn - the willingness to work hard, a serious and studious nature, practicality, economy, sobriety and good powers of concentration.
People with Mercury trine Uranus are imaginative and independent thinkers but are to some extent, erratic. Wherever there is a chance to break fresh ground, this person works wonders, but it is not so easy to contend with humdrum everyday life. Everyday life is experienced as dull and irksome because it offers nothing new and creative or sufficiently original.
Any aspect between Mercury and Uranus will make people with this aspect inventive but they must learn to persevere to carry projects to completion, because there is a streak of laziness in spite of all the mental activity. Saturn will have to be strong in the chart for anything constructive to be done (Renee's chart has three Saturn aspects to balance this).
When the need to communicate, and to isolate and arrange facts (Mercury), coincides with the MC or Midheaven (representing the attitude to society and the self), these people have an ever shifting conception of self and social position, especially in the sphere of contacts and intellectual interests. The result can be many different activities, either at the same time or one after the other, or much change within a single sphere of activity. This is closely connected with a rather unstable self image.
Often people with this conjunction are good at putting thoughts into words and conveying ideas and can easily earn a living in an occupation governed by Mercury (communications, writing, acting etc) but they must have plenty of variety and personal contacts. They are very restless and sometimes nervy, and inclined to objectively reason things out.
THE 11TH HOUSE
The 11th house rules friendships, humanitarian interests, organizations one belongs to, and income derived from self-employment or career. It relates to the role played in the lives of others. It also describes one's hopes and aspirations and capacity for happiness.
PISCES (Mutable Water) ruling the 11th
People with Pisces, ruled by Neptune, on the 11th house cusp, inspires altruism for its own sake. Caring for others can be the natural and immediate expression of a feeling of bonding and solidarity with those with whom we share this planet. They will take up the cause of the underdog. If some segment of the population is suffering or mistreated, they feel this as deeply as if it is happening to them. The main thrust of Pisces ruling the 11th is to abandon the self to the group. Freinds will be supportive and caring. Likewise, people with this rulership will be there to help and nurture associates in difficulty.
THE 12TH HOUSE
The 12th house describes one's inner strengths and weaknesses, the private and hidden side of life, the subconscious mind, dreams, the past and those who wish one harm or work against one's interests. It is where secrets of the unconscious are kept and where problems are swept away or hidden from others which are too painful to face or difficulties refused to be acknowledged.
ARIES (Cardinal Fire) ruling the 12th
Aries, ruled by Mars, on the 12th house cusp, is at its most manic and inconsistent. Sometimes, it is out there in full gear for all to see and at other times, it is just nowhere to be found. It's not like Mars to be so elusive - somewhere along the line it has picked up a trick or two from Neptune, the natural domain of the 12th house. Mars needs to affirm its sense of personal power and identity, and in the 12th this is sometimes paradoxically achieved by giving over its will to another person or higher cause. There is no other domain where Mars can so graciously put itself aside for other people.
SATURN in the 12th house
- the house where Saturn resides shows how one can best focus and assume responsibility or where one feels least secure and tends to overcompensate.
People with Saturn in the 12th house are often afraid of what lurks beneath the surface level of consciousness. Should they relax their controls over themselves, they fear that they might be engulfed by overwhelming emotions. They repress certain drives, impulses and appetites which others would find unacceptable. But some with Saturn in the 12th go a step further. In divorcing themselves from what is in the unconscious, they also inhibit a very positive and pressing desire which exists in all of us - the urge to reconnect to our oneness with the rest of life. Instead of experiencing joy at the prospect of merging with something greater than the self, they recoil in horror at the thought of dissolution of their individuality.
Some with Saturn in the 12th are terrified of intimacy. This could stem from a fear of being engulfed, or a dread of losing their identity as a separate individual. Until they bring their underlying fears and doubts to the surface and explore them, they may take refuge by living mainly "in their heads".
Deep psychological fears which are difficult to trace may contribute to a pervading sense of self doubt and lack of confidence. They may suffer a type of guilt or despair - something inside tells them that they are not all they could be. Saturn in the 12th is known as "undoing by secret enemies" but more often than not, the enemy is an aspect of their own unconscious selves, angry with them for having been brushed aside. When they make friends with what they have rejected, a sense of peace settles over their psyche. If they don't reconcile themselves with parts they have denied, then they protect themselves against invasion by double locking their doors and keeping to themselves.
Saturn in the 12th asks that the whole realm of the unconscious be taken seriously. Those with this placement may be afraid to explore these waters and yet this is precisely what they must do. Should they overcome their fears and embark on the path of psychological self investigation, their efforts will be amply rewarded. They will not only reconnect to severed parts of themselves but regain a lost sense of relatedness to the rest of life in the process.
With Saturn square the MC, these people are often tormented by feelings of inferiority. They are so sensitive to the outside world, especially in social contacts, that they are inclined to either hide behind a cold impassive mask or else tax their energies to further ambitions. Since Saturn represents learning through suffering, they generally maneuver themselves into difficult situations where what seems like child's play to others is drudgery to the person with this aspect. However, they are just as likely to greet reverses with a grim determination. Therefore, this aspect is not an indicator of nothing but hopeless failure and misery. Nevertheless, they do demand a great deal and give a thorough testing before a goal is reached. It is good if they hurry less and are less fretful since that is counterproductive. To be calm and collected can be very helpful.
