VA Grooms

I became intrigued when I was assisting the San Patricio Co TX website for USGENWEB with cemetery surveys to find graves of another family with a similar surname.  I haven’t found a connection to my particular line out of colonial Virginia, but I have found some remarkable documentation for this family.

Levi Grooms, Ltn Virginia Line, REV WAR, VA Stafford County

John Grooms, VA Stafford County

Horatio Grooms, VA, died Travis Co TX;  Lt then Major -  KY Dragoons see Journal of the executive proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America 1829-1837 for appointment 6/11/1836; Col. Texas Militia
Served in 17th Reg. KY Militia, Francisco’s Unit War of 1812, served as constable of Hickman Co KY in 1830’s,. resided with his family in home of Mirabeau Lamar at Austin TX in 1846 (also see reference to historical Grooms annex old Austin at City of Austin website)

Judge Alfred Grooms, TX, died mid 1890s Travis Co TX, see 1880 Travis Co TX census. Served as examiner for General Land Office then president of Grooms Hardware 1891

Elizabeth Grooms, VA

F Harrison Grooms, VA, probably the Francis Grooms who served in the 17th Reg. KY Militia, Francisco’s Unit War of 1812

Thornton Grooms, VA, d Travis Co TX, see 1880 Travis Co TX census in home of nephew Alfred Grooms

Charles H. Grooms, VA 1799, d in 1850’s Grant Co KY., served in 17th Reg, KY Militia, Francisco’s Unit war of 1812.  (I don’t believe this to be the same Charles Grooms who also served in War of 1812 Capt  Steve Ritchie’s unit between 2/1815 and 8/1815 in the Washington/Nelson Co KY area.)

Children of the older brother John Grooms, above, applied for warranty land due their unmarried Uncle Levi Grooms who was killed in 1777 in the Battle of Brandywine.  See affidavits at Revolutionary War site HERITAGE QUEST.  They received 2,666 acres as of 7/20/1833.  See pg 216 REVOLUTIONARY WAR BOUNTY LAND GRANTS.
