VA Grooms

I became intrigued when I was assisting the San Patricio Co TX website for USGENWEB with cemetery surveys to find graves of another family with a similar surname.  I haven’t found a connection to my particular line out of colonial Virginia, but I have found some remarkable documentation for this family.

VA Grooms Family

Levi Grooms, LTN Virginia Line, REV WAR, VA Stafford County, killed at Battle of Brandywine 1777

John Grooms, VA Stafford County

Children of John Grooms filed claim for REV WAR bounty land entitled to uncle Levi Grooms who was killed at Battle of Brandywine. They received approximately 2200 acres in KY 7/20/1833. Since they were in the Hickman,Fulton,Grant County areas of KY, I have assumed that the land grant was in that area.

1. Horatio Grooms, Horatio Grooms, b 2/2/1792 VA died in Travis Co TX; Lt then Major-KY Dragoons see Journal of the executive proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America 1829-1837 for appointment 6/11/1836; Col. Of Texas Militia Independent Republic of Texas.

Relocated to Elkton, KY about 1838 where he practiced until his death, October 6, 1857. He married Nancy Hanna of Allensville, daughter of Stephen Hanna, Sr., native of PA, and Elizabeth Forman. Early biography of Dr. Stephen Grooms indicated that Dr Hiram was a brother to Col. Horatio Grooms of KY. Dr. Hiram was not one of the petitioners for the land grant.
