Grandfather of Trees

Grandfather of trees
Standing tall
Among the saplings
Silently waiting.

Limbs bare
Sap quit flowing
Long ago
Skeleton remains.

Its beauty
Not eye pleasing
But
Endurance.

It has witnessed
High winds and
Crackling lightening
And yet remains.

It is wisdom
Seen everything
Patiently rooted
In this grass woven soil.

It has known
The joy of spring
When buds exploded
And covered it with leaves.

It has known
The sadness of fall
When all its leaves
Turned and dropped.

Once it showered the earth
With nuts
Nourishment and
New life.

Now it silently sits there
Watching its
Remnants removed
Limb by limb.

And I ask myself
What is its story?
Why has it
Remained?
