Emaciation live at City of Roses music festival ! "
Review by Kirby Ray, pics by Jason C.
Emerging from the darkest depths of terror, Emaciation returns to their hometown of Cape Girardeau, Missouri to play a set of tunes for no other than the fans who have supported them in the belt buckle of the bible belt ! The fest that they have joined onto is is a two day BLUES-FEST that has been going on there for some years, but never with a true metal band such as this ! A suprise is to be had by all !
As the night goes on, bands are playing all through the downtown riverfront district in Cape with soft songs, happy songs, & blues numbers . Little did the fans here know what to expect . The fest had been promoted on the local television stations & the local radio . The local rock radio jocks on Real Rock 99.3 FM, had been pushing Emaciation as the ONLY hard metal band in the area & that they were appearing at the fest . The venue that Emaciation was given to play was no more than a upstairs bar floor area . The band did not seem to be miffed with these conditions as they have been canceled & worse in this area .
The room fills with eager locals as the band readys themselves for attack on the crowd ! About 75 to 100 people fill the room & await the band as they get corpse painted & have their roadie's do a quick soundcheck . They take the stage with a strong windlike intro & then tear into their first title, " Unspoken ." Emac's sound is death / black / thrash style with touches of classical influence . The frontman, Kirby Ray has also been known bring classical styles into the groups sound, & he believes it is a very close link to true metal .
Emac then connects three more of their songs onto the end of the first one : " Analyzed Remains, Mastery Beyond, Old Burnt Mill ." The crowd response is totally piercing as the band finishes the first set of tunes . A suprise for this blues crowd ! They pick back up a blistering cover of Six Feet Under's " War is Coming, " with the help of Prostate's frontman Jason Copsy backing Kirby of vocals .
The crowd screams for more now, unlike they ever have ! The band tunes to " D " now & prepairs to slay the crowd with what short time they have been allowed . They grind through originals like : " Blasted, Sighting of an Ectoplasm, Vivid End, & Spoils of Brutality . "
Then to end the show, they do a killer cover of Celtic Frost's " Dethroned Emperor " that leaves the crowd on their knees for more ! The fest only allowed them a 40 minute set & these fans seem to have gotten more than their moneys worth ! The local support was truely superb for the bootheel of Missouri ! Check this band on their US tour in 2000, Milwaukee Metalfest 2000, & look for their new cd in 2000 ! Don't miss this group if you are into true metal !
