Lined Basket

Baskets of any size or shape can be made attractive and useful by lining with colorful fabrics.

Material Needed:

Amount of fabric needed is determined by the size and shape of the basket.

Cotton fabric, soft blends, sheers are sutiable.

Bright Christmas prints or small pastel prints make attractive linings.

Batting is used for padding.

Use tacky glue or glue gun.

Directions

STEP 1

Measure around the basket and double that mesurement for the length of fabric strip to be gathered.
(If full gathering is desired make a strip two and a half times the measurement).

STEP 2

Measure the depth of the basket and add 4 inches.
This measurement is the width of the strip to be gathered.

STEP 3

Cut strips to fit measurements on crosswise of fabric.
Sew a seam in ends to form a circle.

STEP 4

Stitch a gathering thread 1/2 inch from raw edge at botton of strip.
Fold tip edge down 2 inches and press.
Stitch gathering thread 1 inch from folded edge at top and another 1/4 inch below the first. (figure1).

STEP 5

Draw up gathers to fit the basket top and bottom.
Adjust evenly.
With the worng side of fabric next to basket, glue the top gathering lind just under the top of basket.
Straighten the gathers at bottom of basket and glue in place.

TO MAKE BASE:

STEP 1

Trace the bottom shape of basket onto lightweight cardboard.
Cut cardboard 1/4 inch smaller than tracing line.
Cut two pieces of batting using cardboard as pattern.

STEP 2

Place cardboard onto fabric piece and trace edge.
Add 2 inches more to the traced edge and cut fabric piece (figure 2).

STEP 3

Stitch a gathering thread 1/2 inch from raw edge.

STEP 4

Lay fabric right side down.
Center tow layers of batting on fabric.
Place cardboard piece on top of batting.

STEP 5

Drew up gathering thread around cardboard until snug and smooth.
Fasten securely. Glue base into basket.
