MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

Paring knife
Medium-sized, hard, blemishfree fall apple,
such as a McIntosh, Winesap, or Jonathan
Apple corer
#20-gauge floral wire
Equal parts vinegar or lemon juice and water
Bowl
Table salt
Powdered sulfur(available from a garden-supply store)
Hot glue gun with clear glue sticks, or white craft or household glue
Two brown or black beads 1/8 inch in diameter
Raw wool, cotton or fur
Two 9-inch-long pipe cleaners
Cotton or polyester batting
Sissors
Old nylon hose, cut lengthwise into 2-inch-wide strips
Needle and thread
Calico fabric

1. Carefully peel an apple and remove a thin diameter of core. Shape the face by carving out two sockets for the eyes, with slits above for the eyebrows, and a broad nose, then cut a slit for the mouth. If you wish, carve away portions of the apple to represent prominent facial features, such as the nose, checks, and ears,

2. Insert a piece of floral wire into the apple. Start at the bottom 1/2 inch from the core on the side of the face, going up and out near the top hole, over the hole, down the other side of the apple, and out the bottom. Twist the two ends of the wire together directly under the apple.
