Luci
             December 1999                       ;November 2000

This beautiful animal came into my life on November 4, 1999.
She had been left in the fenced in area at the local Humane Society.
When I came to work that day
she had already given birth to nine puppies.
Whoever had left her had not even put a blanket in for her.
The girls had found her when they came in earlier
and had taken her into the office area.
Later that day she was to give birth to two puppies that were stillborn.
She lay there all day, taking care of her puppies and
not once did she leave or want out.
We tried all day to find a foster home for her
but we couldn't, so that night
we left her in the office with her puppies.
I talked to my husband that night and explained
why the puppies would get sick there and needed a temporary home
if they were to have a chance.
He agreed that we would foster them and then try to adopt them out.
So the next day I brought Mama Luci and four of her puppies home with me.
I had a sheltie mix and was hoping that they would get along okay.
Lady, my sheltie, was so excited when she saw the puppies.
She couldn't get too close because Mama was very protective.

That day changed my life.
When I was very young I had watched a movie with a yellow dog in it,
and I never forgot it.
Although I had told everyone I was only fostering them
I knew I would not take Mama back to the shelter.
We thought she was about six years old,
and by the way she labored with the puppies,
our next thought was that she was
probably heartworm positive.
There are not too many people who come into a shelter
looking for a dog that will take on the respondsibility
or expense of that adoption.
But I knew in my heart that this was my friend I had been looking for.
We had so much fun helping her tend to her puppies
and as I suspected she was my friend.
She was and is a loving dog and all she wanted
was someone to love her back.
Here are her puppies when they were six days old.

On the following pages you can meet each of them.
and see why they filled my heart so much.
I watched them grow and was happy and excited,
and yet very sad because the day was getting closer
when I would have to let them go.
I worried over them as a mother does her child
knowing all the bad things that could happen to them.
Would they go to a home only later to be dumped by the side of the road
the girls having litter after litter,
or not taken care of properly medically and ending up sick and dying?
Would they be in a home where they would be mistreated,
and hurt?
All puppies are cute and lovable, only they grow up.
Mine were going to be big dogs,
would they be loved and taken care of then?
Mama Luci started to gain some weight
and after the babies were eating solid food,
she was taken to Dr. Brenda to have a heartworm check and get spayed.
As we suspected she was positive, but she was going to be treated,
so we spayed her first and let her recover from that surgery
and I prayed she would be alright.
During heartworm treatment she should be quiet as possible
and I knew that was going to be hard to do with Noodles and Elijah still with her.
They have been together since birth
and I have never seen three dogs more devoted to each other.
We finally let Luci be with her pups
because she was calmer that way, and everything turned out fine.
I am told by my vets that she may be a little overweight now
-what do you think?

I would like to thank the people who
helped me with Luci's heartworm treatment.
They made it possible for me to
spend more time with her.
Without their help I would have had to take a second job
and their generousity touched my heart.
Luci and I are very grateful.
You will never know how much your act of kindness
has touched our hearts
and we have vowed to do all we can
for homeless animals.
Thank you
