Please walk with with me through "Our Location History"...The Renaissance Antique Co. is located in the heart of the Ozarks. A quaint little town called Bolivar, also the county seat. We are housed in a historical building one block off the square. The building is pictured twice in a Polk County history. In 1895 it was known as the Tavern to most folks...and so the story goes...The lot at Jackson and Market where the Tavern stood, and where is now located the Renaissance Antique Co., has a colorful history in itself. It first appears on the land books in 1841 when County Commissioner William Jamison sold it to himself in a deal that was not unusual on the frontier but might draw fire today. In the oft-renovated building can be seen many marks of the past. There are two board & batten doors, 1x4-in. tongue & groove boards, now rare, bits of antique wainscoting and board-thick paneling. Construction is post and beam, with 2x12 joists in the basement. The building is a long 32x100 ft. Its century-long list of occupants is incredibly varied...In 1919 when prohibition closed all saloons the Tavern was turned into a soda pop factory..

As with a lot of old buildings, this one is said to be haunted. According to doubtful legend, in the days of the Tavern, men killed in brawls upstairs were buried in the dirt-floor basement and their spirits still haunt the place. The legend would be difficult to confirm. The bodies, if any, now lie under a solid concrete floor.

A special Thank You to "The Resume", March 1997 for their research and creative writing.
