PUPPY UPDATE, August 11, 2010:
Managed to get a few individual shots of the puppies today. Sabra is only away from her babies for short periods of time, which make it difficult for taking pictures and examining their markings very closely yet. She tends to be overly protective of her babies, especially in the beginning. This is a very verbal litter! They are currently living in a large box in our kitchen because it is so hot outside. So far they are sleeping during the day, and chattering/crying off and on all night. They become quite frustrated when they can't find mom's udder! That should improve once their eyes open so that they can more easily find what they want. They are quite small, but already seem to have grown a lot. Their bellies are already becoming quite rounded. All seem strong and healthy. Weights of the puppies as of today are as follows: Puppy #1 - 1 lb. 0 oz., Puppy #2 - 1 lb. 4 oz., Puppy #3 - 1 lb. 4 oz., Puppy #4 - 1 lb. 5 oz.
PUPPY UPDATE, August 18, 2010:
The babies' eyes are now open, so they will quickly become curious about their world. Last weekend we moved the puppies from our kitchen out to Sabra's puppy house. The temps here had been too hot for them to be out there, but thankfully cooled off over the weekend and shouldn't be quite so hot the rest of the summer (we hope.....). The puppies are still working on strengthening their legs so they can walk instead of crawl. They feel quite stout when they squirm when I hold them, because they aren't quite sure about us people yet. Sabra is still being mostly pretty defensive about her babies. She doesn't like for me to hold them and tries to take them back away from me while she whimpers loudly. So currently I am only "allowed" to hold them for short periods of time. Haven't gotten current weights on the puppies yet this week, but will try to do so, if Sabra will allow it.
PUPPY UPDATE, August 25, 2010:
The babies are so much cuter once their eyes are open and they are so much more curious now. The boy is so laid back and just melts into our arms when he's held. The medium dark red girl is feisty and maybe has a temper - she squirms when we try to hold her and can be very verbal. She may have an attitude! The little girl and lighter medium girl are a little leery, but curious about us people. They spend a lot of time chewing on each other now and still sleep quite a bit. Not sure they've really "discovered" their toys yet. They are still a bit awkward trying to walk, but getting better. It's always funny to me that puppies start out crawling the same as human babies do! The puppies have all grown quite a bit have very rounded tummies. The little girl (Puppy #1) is still quite a bit smaller than the other pups, and Puppy #4 (the boy) is still the largest.
PUPPY UPDATE, September 1, 2010:
The babies are at a very cute stage right now, and Sabra is already potty training them to go outside of her house to do their "business." They also have now started eating some puppy food, but at this point still mainly nurse their mom. They have toys they could play with, but so far they mostly enjoy chewing on each other. They are very playful and funny to watch. The dark red girl (Puppy #2) had seemed a bit unfriendly (very resistant to being held and very verbal about it), but she is coming around now. Today the lighter colored girl (Puppy #3) was especially friendly. The boy didn't want held today because he didn't want interrupted from nursing mom! The little girl is very cute and doesn't mind being held at all. Hard to believe they're three weeks old already! They sure change a lot in a short amount of time.....
PUPPY UPDATE, September 8, 2010: The puppies have really been growing and are incredibly playful right now. They also have very round tummies! They are both nursing and eating puppy food now. I think the friendliest puppy is likely Puppy #3, and she likes to be held. Puppy #2 continues to not be overly fond of being held. She seeks out attention, but only wants held for short periods of time. Puppy #4 just melts in your arms when holding him. Puppy #1 is friendly and doesn't mind held either. Puppy #3 is now the second smallest puppy. She's just a little larger than Puppy #1. Puppy #2 is quite a bit larger than the other two girls. Puppy #4 continues to be the largest puppy. I recorded a video of the puppies playing earlier today and will program it into our site. If you'd like to see the full resolution version, email me and I can "share" it with you from my Facebook page.
PUPPY UPDATE, September 17, 2010: The puppies' personalities are becoming increasingly evident. Despite being the smallest puppy, Puppy #1 may be the boldest. For sure she's an explorer and an adventurer. She seeks out attention and enjoys being held and cuddled. Puppy #2 especially likes to roll over and have her belly tickled. She seeks attention, but doesn't want held for very long. She is the second largest puppy. Puppy #3 is very sweet, seeks out attention, enjoys being held, and gives lots of licky kisses. She is the second smallest puppy. Puppy #4 may be the most talkative. Buyers of our sheltchows always tell us our puppies have a language all of their own and are quite expressive and talkative. Puppy #4 may be the most laid back, and yet is still very friendly and playful. He is the largest puppy, but Puppy #2 is now nearly as large as her brother. The puppies will be turning six weeks old this Sunday. We will plan on taking them to see our vet next week for their first shots and preventative dewormer.
PUPPY UPDATE, September 21, 2010: Last night we weighed all the puppies, although the weights may not be all that accurate. They are too large now for our ounce scales, which only go up to 5 lb. 4 oz. So had to weigh them holding them and subtract for our weight. Puppy #4 weighed 11 lbs., Puppy #2 weighed 10 lbs., Puppy #3 weighed 7 lbs., and Puppy #1 weighed 5 lbs. We will have more accurate weights on Thursday when the puppies are scheduled to visit our vet for their first shots and preventative dewormer. There is a significant difference in weights between the two largest and two smallest puppies!
PUPPY UPDATE, September 23, 2010: It's too bad I didn't get pics taken of the babies yesterday morning, since it began raining by afternoon and excessive rainfall today that has left our yard quite muddy. All the dogs tend to be grumpy on rainy days, and Sabra's babies were whining a lot today, mainly because she sought shelter away from them, for whatever reason (mommy break?). Will plan on taking updated pics tomorrow when the sun is to return and the puppies should be less messy. I also rescheduled their vet appointment for tomorrow because I didn't want to carry their carriers to and from my car in such heavy rain. Will plan on updating again tomorrow......"
PUPPY UPDATE, September 26, 2010: I took the pups to see our vet on Friday. Puppy #3 was the only one who got car sick, and it was just drool, so not all bad. Everyone checked out fine, and I have a health record for each puppy to provide to new owners that details the shots and preventative dewormer they received. Puppy #1 weighed in at 7.1 lbs., Puppy #2 weighed in at 10.5 lbs., Puppy #3 weighed in at 6.8 lbs., and Puppy #4 weighed in at 11.1 lbs. I was surprised that Puppy #1 now weighs more than Puppy #3. Puppy #1 has always been small. Early on Puppy #3 and #2 were the same size. Now Puppy #3 is so much smaller than #2, who now is nearly as large as her brother, #4. So, quite a variance in their weights. Haven't had a chance to take a video in recent days. The day I took the latest pics, the puppies were ready for their naps. Will try to take another video soon.
PUPPY UPDATE, October 4, 2010: Last week was so crazy busy getting things wrapped up before a weekend trip, that unfortunately I did not have time to take new puppy pics. I will plan on taking some tomorrow and getting them programmed into our site by day's end. Two puppies are now sold, Puppies #1 and #3. The two largest puppies are still available. Puppy #4 saw our vet today for what I thought was ear infection; however, the vet thinks instead that there are sores in his ears due to another puppy chewing on him while they play. She gave me some medicated wipes to use on his ears and put him on antibiotics for seven days. Today he weighed in at 14 lbs. Currently Puppy #1 is the friendliest and most loving, with Puppy #4 being a close second. Puppies #2 and #3 have been too "busy" lately, so that I seek them out rather than them seeking me out. But they both do enjoy the attention as well. They like it when our little sheltie puppy is out in the yard to play with them, so that he sometimes captures their attention more than I do :-). The puppies turned 8 weeks old yesterday so can now go to their new homes at any time. Let me know if you have any questions, as we welcome inquiries and will reply promptly to any questions you may have. Please note that all buyers of our puppies should be familiar with both the Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie) and Chow Chow breeds, as traits from either or both may be present in our puppies. Puppyfind.com has some links for information about each breed of dog and may be an excellent source for learning about the particular traits of each.
PUPPY UPDATE, October 12, 2010: Last week all the puppies had been sold; however, this week two buyers have backed out from buying puppies and one has oddly become unreachable. Puppy #4 went to his new home 10/10/10 - the other three puppies are now again available. Puppies #1 and #3 are similar in size, both more petite. Puppy #2 is quite a bit larger and will more than likely grow to be a relatively large dog. Puppy #2 although sweet with people who interact with her, has in recent days become very aggressive with Puppy #1. This concerns me. I would recommend for her to be an only dog, as she may have social skills issues in relation to interacting with other dogs. Currently Puppy #1 is the friendliest; however, she has been very spoiled by my daughter. Puppy #3 has been a bit more reserved lately, but is still a very nice puppy as well. Puppy #2 is very loving with us and very friendly. I took new pics today, but likely won't get them programmed into our site till tomorrow.
