Selam Environmental Development Association (SEDA)

The Selam Environmental Development Association (SEDA) was formed on the basis of a direct felt-need of the founders and target communities to address the deterioration of the physical environment and underdevelopment of human resources. SEDA's area of operations was identified after a series of analytic surveys. The Rift-valley Region was found to be the most marginalized area with abundant resources but with farming and other practices which needed improvement. SEDA therefore proposed and the Oromia Regional state approved interventions to combat problems in the areas of resource degradation, increasing poverty, competition from private investors, increasing population and failure of development activities to incorporate the vulnerable groups of society. Since the program approval, SEDA is now undertaking different activities that are aimed to alleviate the problems of grass-roots communities. The activities include communal and private forestation programs, cash crop production improvement, promoting environmental education, women's credit and saving schemes, and environmental impact assessments.
