Over the Khangai Mountains from the Gobi Desert to Kharkhorin
This 400km ride through remote and beautiful scenery provides an opportunity to see the real Mongolia: vast and varied landscapes, nomadic families, and historical sites. Starting with an internal flight to Bayankhongor on the northern edge of the Gobi Desert, the route goes into the Khangai Mountains, second highest range in Mongolia, and finishes at Kharkhorin the site of Chinggis Khan's capital in the thirteenth century.
Along the way you will almost certainly be invited into the homes of local families who will offer you tea or airag (fermented mares milk) and will probably want to swap a quick spin on your bike for a canter across the valley on their horse.
The riding is 100% off road, following rough jeep tracks for most of the way. The highest point is Khul Sayangiin Davaa at 2750 meters, and there are several technical downhill stretches. Daily riding distance varies from about 40km up to a maximum of nearly 100km on the last day when the going is much faster. This is quite a challenging ride requiring a good level of fitness and some mountain biking experience.
Day 1 (Tuesday 08 June) Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel.
Day 2 (Wednesday 09 June) Fly to Bayankhongor. Start riding into the mountains. Overnight camp beside small river. *(B, D)
Day 3 (Thursday 10 June) Ride along the valley to Shargaljuut. In the hills surrounding this small village are hundreds of hot and cold mineral springs. A health resort for local people has been established. Afternoon continue riding over the mountains to set up camp in the next valley. (B, L, D)
Day 4 (Friday 11 June) There are a couple of long slow uphill stretches followed by glorious downhills. These valleys are inhabited only by nomadic families with their herds of sheep and yaks. They make passers-by very welcome, and you are sure to be invited into their ger for a bowl of "airag" (fermented mare's milk) and piece of cheese. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 5 (Saturday 12 June) Ride up to the highest point - Khul Sayangiin Davaa, through increasingly remote and wild countryside. Towards the end of the day the track gets rougher and there are several rivers to cross. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 6 (Sunday 13 June) At first the track continues along a rocky river bed. Then the scenery starts to change, becoming greener with a few trees. There are magnificent views of the route that can be admired from each pass. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 7 (Monday 14 June) Ride over one small pass to reach Bulgan village, the first sign of civilisation since Day 3. Stop for lunch at a popular local restaurant in Tsetserleg town, the capital of Arkhangai province, and afternoon reach the camping spot beside the Tamir river. (B, L, D)
Day 8 (Tuesday 15 June) The track is now a fast rough road passing through much more open hilly landscapes and the 100km to reach Kharkhorin can usually be managed by late afternoon. Overnight camp beside the Orkhon river. (B, L, D)
Day 9 (Wednesday 16 June) Visit Erdene Zuu Buddhist monastery, built on the site of Chenggis Khaan\rquote s capital. See the temples and watch the morning ceremonies of the residing monks. Afternoon return by jeep to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight hotel. (B, L)
Day 10 (Thursday 17 June) Free day in UB for sightseeing and shopping (can be Day 2 if the flight schedule necessitates).

Naadam Festival in Central Mongolia
06 - 16 July 2004
This tour is a chance to experience the best of Mongolian culture and a variety of landscapes and activities. The annual Naadam festival is celebrated in every city, town and village and is a sporting event with horse racing, wrestling and archery competitions. As well as enjoying the festival there will be opportunities to meet nomadic families and see how their ancient lifestyle has survived.
The route passes through all the different geographical zones of Mongolia: desert, steppe, mountain and forest. There will be some horse riding and hiking, and probably the chance to ride on a yak and cart or a camel, as the local people do. (These activities are optional).
A visit to Mongolia would not be complete without travelling to the Orkhon Valley where Genghis Khan established the capital of the great Mongol Empire. Little remains of that era, but a huge Buddhist monastery was built on the same site in the sixteenth century. Back in Ulaanbaatar one can visit temples, museums, shops, restaurants and art galleries. This 12-day itinerary reflects the fact that Mongolia is a land of variety and contrast.
Day 1 (Tuesday 06 July) Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon at leisure. The central Sukhbaatar Square is only a few minutes walk from the hotel, and the main shops, bars and restaurants are situated nearby.
Day 2 (Wednesday 07 July) By jeep to a small village outside Ulaanbaatar where we will spend the day with a nomadic family, observing their daily life and ancient traditions. Evening return to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight hotel. (B, L)*
Day 3 (Thursday 08 July) By jeep to Elsen Tasarkhai, an area of big sand dunes and desert vegetation. Evening explore the dramatic surroundings. Overnight ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 4 (Friday 09 July) A short drive to Kharkhorin, the valley where Ghingiss Khan established his capital in the thirteenth century. Visit Erdene Zuu monastery, the original centre of Buddhism in Mongolia. Overnight ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 5 (Saturday 10 July) Jeep to Tsetserleg, the capital town of Arkhangai province. Stroll around the market and visit the local museum (if open). Lunch at a popular restaurant in the town. Drive over Bulgan mountain to Ikh Tamir. Overnight ger camp beside the sacred Taikhir Choloo stone. (B, L, D)
Day 6 (Sunday 11 July) Enjoy the Naadam festival with the local people, watching horse racing, wrestling and archery competitions. The horses are ridden by children over a distance of approximately 30km, and the cheering crowds are almost all on horseback themselves. Overnight Tsenkher ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 7 (Monday 12 July) Horse riding or hiking in the mountains. At this time of year the meadows are filled with wild flowers and in the forest are berries which the local children like to pick. Spend time relaxing in the hot outdoor mineral baths at the ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 8 (Tuesday 13 July) Jeep to Khogno Khan mountain. Overnight ger camp at the foot of the spectacular granite rocks. (B, L, D)
Day 9 (Wednesday 14 July) Hike around Khogno Khan mountain to the other side where a small temple has been built nearby the ruins of a much older Buddhist monastery. Afternoon ride horses or relax in these beautiful surroundings. Overnight ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 10 (Thursday 15 July) Jeep to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight hotel. (B, L, )
Day 11 (Friday 16 July) Ulaanbaatar city tour. Visit Gandantegchinlen Hid, the most important monastery in the country, the natural history museum with its excellent dinosaur displays, and the Chojin Lam temple which has exhibits both bizarre and beautiful. Evening concert of traditional music and dance in one of the theatres. Overnight hotel. (B)
Day 12 (Saturday 17 July) Transfer to airport for departure.
Price: US $ 1495 per person
Single supplement: US $ 88

Mountain Biking in the Valley of the Khaans (Orkhon) (17 - 25 August 2004)
This 300km ride in the remote valleys of the Khangai mountains, gives the opportunity to experience the beautiful landscape of Central Mongolia and the ancient nomadic lifestyle of the Khalkh Mongols. The circular route starts and finishes at Kharkhorin which was the centre of the great Mongol Empire ruled by Ghinggis Khan. It passes along the Orkhon river valley which has a rich history as the centre of several kingdoms dating back more than a millenia, and continues onwards through varied mountain, forest and open steppe scenery.
The riding is 100% off road, following rough jeep tracks for most of the way, with a number of river crossings. The highest point is Ultiin Davaa pass which is at an altitude of nearly 2000 metres and the daily riding distance is approximately 35km on rough terrain, apart from the last day when the going is faster and we cover nearly 100km. The tour is suitable for anyone who rides regularly and is of reasonable fitness.
This is a part of Mongolia not normally visited by tourists so there are no facilities other than the traditional ger camps at Kharkhorin and Tsenkher hot springs, so most nights will be spent camping in the wild.
Day 1 (Tuesday 17 August) Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel.
Day 2 (Wednesday 18 August) By jeep across the vast and magnificent landscape to reach the Orkhon valley. This was the political centre of the ruling tribes from ancient times until the 14 th century. The Turks, Qidan, Uighurs and the Mongols all established their capitals within 50km of the present day town of Kharkhorin. Overnight ger camp. (B, L, D)
Day 3 (Thursday 19 August) Assemble bikes and start riding southwards along the river, across the open plain and into the rolling hills. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 4 (Friday 20 August) Continue riding southwards, passing nearby Batulzii village, to reach a remarkable area of black rocks and long lava flows, gorges and waterfalls created by volcanic activity twenty million years ago. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 5 (Saturday 21 August) Ride through stunning scenery along the base of the Orkhon valley, crossing the river many times where there are no bridges. There are interesting water birds , especially the colourful ruddy shellduck, and lots of ground squirrels, as well as many nomadic families with their herds of yaks and cashmere goats. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 6 (Sunday 22 August) Pass by an area where gold is being mined in the mountains, and up to the highest point at Ulttin Davaa pass (altitude 2000 meters). The forest track zig zags down the other side of the pass into the lush meadows of the Tsetserleg river valley. Overnight camping. (B, L, D)
Day 7 (Monday 23 August) Continue riding westwards, stopping at the tiny Buddhist temple of Bombat Tugs Bayasgalant Hid, situated on the previous site of Tsenkher village. Monks come from the surrounding area on the 3rd, 8th, 15th and 25th of each lunar month to perform ceremonies here. Riding past unusual big granite rock formations, climb up to Bogoch Pass (1800 metres), and down to the valley to arrive at Tsenkher hot mineral springs. Overnight ger camp.
Day 8 (Tuesday 24 August) Ride through lovely wild flower meadows and across the open river valley to Tsetserleg town, the capital of Arkhangai Province. Take lunch at a local restaurant, then continue in the afternoon to Tsenkher village. Overnight camping beside the Tamir river. (B, L, D)
Day 9 (Wednesday 25 August) The track is now a rough road passing through much more open hilly landscapes. Coming to the end of the ride, it should not be too difficult for most people to manage the 100 km to complete the circle and arrive back at Kharkhorin. Overnight ger camp. (B, L, D).
Day 10 (Thursday 26 August) In the morning visit the monastery of Erdene Zuu, the original center of Buddhism in Mongolia. Founded in the sixteenth century this marvellous complex was built on the site of Ghinggis Khan's capital, using the remains of his city. Afternoon return by jeep to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight hotel. Education:

Mongolia is situated between Russia and China. It is the seventh largest country in Asia and the 18th largest in the world. However, although comprising an area of 1.6 million kilometers, it has a small population of 2.6 million.
Mongolia is well-endowed with natural resources and livestock. The country possesses 31 million head of livestock, sizable reserves of copper, gold, coal and other minerals. Prospects for petroleum in commercial quantities are estimated to be very high. However very little evaluation of petroleum resources, using state-of-the-art technology, has been performed.
Mongolia also has a well-developed human resource base with an adult literacy rate of 96 percent. Education is extremely important to Mongolians. Families living in a ger ( e.g., yurt) far from a major city will sell their horses, sheep and other livestock, which are the symbols of wealth in rural Mongolia, in order to send their children to the city for an education.
The 70 year reign of Communism, which ended in 1992, resulted in a diverse cultural character. The major cities led by the capital Ulaanbaatar resembled old Russian cities as the former Soviet Union both influenced and contributed to the development of these cities and their supporting infrastructures. The Ulaanbaatar skyline, for example, is now dominated by construction cranes as it transforms to a modern European city, City residents tend to adapt to the life style trends popular in Russia, Poland and Germany.
By contrast the beautiful countryside has minimal energy, communication and transportation infrastructures. In fact rural Mongolia is still the home of nomads living much as their ancestors did under Chinggus Khan, who is still a cult hero to Mongolians even after many centuries.

John Pemberton Energy Industry Credentials
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Authored over 600 comprehensive reports on the Utilities industry business strategies, business processes and mission critical systems. These research reports coupled with consulting and system integration services covered:
CONSULTING PROJECTS:
Market Research: Provided research, analysis and report preparation for several well-known energy industry and information technology (IT) market research organizations, on a wide variety of energy industry and IT issues. Research work includes extensive vendor and energy executive interviews, presentations and IT system-planning strategy development.
Energy Management System (EMS): Developed an EMS planning and implementation strategy for a provider of enhanced EMS services to large commercial and industrial (C&I) companies and government agencies. The work provided for incremental enhancement of a core EMS providing bill consolidation and payment as well as basic energy profile analysis. Enhancements included normalization of energy rates for facilities spread across wide geographies. Normalization included accounting for rate structure variations, temperature factors and local pricing differentials of alternative fuels. Other enhancements included risk management hedging capabilities, real time pricing (RTP), local generation value analysis, and power quality management (PQM). Potential application vendor lists for various enhancements were provided as well as competitive analysis of other third party EMS services and those provided by investor owned utility companies.
Electric Power Trading and Transmission: Developed a strategy report and provided consulting for emerging regional (electric) transmission organizations (RTOs). The report and consulting services covered E-Tag based power transmission scheduling and OASIS and trading exchange based transmission capacity allocation. The strategies developed evolved power transmission scheduling from a low-tech low volume telephone and clipboard solution to an advanced highly scalable Internet based solution able to support retail market deregulation.
Rural Electric Cooperatives: Developed a comprehensive planning manual on Customer Information Systems (CISs) for rural electric cooperatives. The planning document provided detailed packaged application selection criteria and eBusiness direction of CIS.
Database Analysis Tools Business Development Provided extensive pre-launch guidance to a start-up company developing a sophisticated automated database extraction, transfer and load (ETL) tool set. My work effort included developing the collateral that led to its initial venture funding and designing both channel and direct sale marketing strategies.
Utilities Industry Work Management: Helped a vendor of conventional work management systems re-engineer its software for web site work execution. In the process of this effort I assisted the vendor in changing its marketing, pricing and sales strategies as well as its corporate name.
