Specialized systems are used in Air-to-Air combat too. In World War 2, fighter planes only had machine guns, they were inaccurate and required the pilot to hit the target himself. In modern days, heat-seeking missiles have been developed that track down the exhaust from a planes jet engine and follow the plane until it catches up. Most of the missiles can outspeed the planes and are difficult to manuever away from.
